Cracked Laptop Monitor - oops

The LCD has been shattered...mishap at home involving the cat. I'm ordering a new one and I believe I can install it, but is there anyway I can use my old PC monitor to work until i get the new one? The broken screen is unreadable, so anything involving a setup is impossible. Any help would be great.

normally you can just plug in the external monitor, but it might require you to enable the video out in the bios, in that case you're SOL if you cannot read.

If its a dell, try using the "Fn + F8" trick after you plug in the external monitor.

If you power-on the laptop with the monitor cable attached, it should automatically use both screens, or at least just the monitor.

Power on with the monitor or use the key combination while booted to switch between LCD and external. CAKE>
