Cracked core

I bought a new fan/heatsink for my xp 3000+. I initially had a lot of trouble installing the fan/heatsink since the case is quite small and there isnt much room around the edges of the socket. After I installed it, the computer would start up, but then shut down after a few seconds. How do I prevent this from happening again? I inserted one side of the clip, then pushed down on the other end. My guess is that I didnt have the heatsink oriented the right way so the copper base would rest squarely on the core.

I made a photo guide (it even has a video clip showing a good technique for clipping the clip) and that is right here. As you can see, yes, it matters which way the heatsink and clip are oriented. If your case is that cramped, then take the motherboard out of the case first.

You might also want to look at the credit-card technique illustrated here.
