cracked core on a DURON? NAH

So, I got my new Taisol 734. It huge, and has a massive footprint. The clip is stiff... I tried to put it on my Duron 700mhz (that has been running along at 1000mhz for two months or so...) GENTLY as i could.

when i reboot it says checksum core blah, blah and resets my BIOS to 700mhz. Well, I end up putting my old heatsink back on and trying to over clock again...nothing works over default. Not only that the temperture on default is now 45 idle. 45 degrees C was my full load temp with it overclosked to 1000mhz!

So, is this a cracked core, or could it be my motherboard? And next...to prevent it happening again: shim, loosen the Taisol clip? What?

I guess this finishes out the Triumvirate of stupidness for me...one burn out for heat, one burnout for a MB and now a cracked core?

Thanks, let me know any of your thoughts or suggestions....

Needless to say I feel stupid, you don't have to re-enforce that....

Edit: It seems as if my reduction in heat from the Taisol reduced the needed input voltage requirement for 1gig. Instead of 1.85v I only need 1.8v now. and it drop my CPU by 10 degrees C. Not bad....

Well if it posts then the core shouldn't be cracked. My guess is it's something else. Check and make sure you didn't ruin any resistors mounting that giant.

Didn't get close to any of the resistors...the KT7 is roomy in all the right directions for this heatsink...

Try rechecking your fancy pencil work w/connecting the L1 bridges. Maybe something happened there. And be sure you have the right amount of themal paste on because your proc should run at least a little cooler than that.
