Crack in the windshield

Svnla

Lifer
So I went to my vehicle after work, pulled down the reflective windshield cover <to reduce the heat> and there it was, a long L shape crack about 10 inches on the pass. side.

It started from the roof, then down about 6 inches, then turned right about 4 inches toward the right door side. It is about 10 inches away from the pass. side frame.

How did it happen? It wasn't there this morning. I had two chips on the drive side and had them fixed but never had a crack this long/big or ever any crack on any windshield before.

So how much would it cost to fix it? It is a Honda small SUV and I have comprehensive insurance with State Farm and $250 deductible.

Any recommends for what brand of glass? What do I need to ask or watch out for of the shop? I heard PPG glass is good?

TIA.

Yep, $250. You pay your deductible.

This of course is unless the windshield costs less than that. I replaced the windshield in my car out-of-pocket due to it being a previous condition when I bought the car. It was covered in scratches that made it hard to see because of glare (wonder what the old owner did to it). It cost me $208. This was at safelite auto glass.

People don't comment if you don't know what the fuck you are talking about.

First call State Farm and ask. Many carriers will cover windshields at $0 ded if you have comprehensive. It's more or less decided on based on state, but some carriers have their own policies that give you a better benefit than the state required.

The insurance company will usually have a decent installer recommendation.

I have State Farm myself with Full Glass coverage.
I do not recall if there is a small $50 deductible on
mine or not. But on my Grand Prix it did run around
$200 or so about 2 years ago when it cracked. Shop
did an excellent job, no noise or leaks.

Some windshield places will also give you a kickback if you have a $0 deductible, or pay your deductible up to a certain amount..

Yes, but also ask if they're going to jack up your rates as well.

In the states where it's covered I believe that it won't hurt your rates. The logic is that a rock can hit anyone's windshield and it's not necessarily your fault so it shouldn't count against you.

Who pissed in your cheerios?

My answer is CORRECT, in some circumstances. At the MOST he'll pay $250.

Local place charged my insurance company $314 for a new windshield. I paid nothing, though there was technically a $50 deductible.
Let the sealant dry overnight before driving it.

Another option would be to get the crack stop drilled to prevent it from elongating, if you weren't in the mood to replace the glass.

You just said $250...no qualifications or exclusions. You know if you said it's 9:00 you'd be right twice a day too.

You have to realize he buys gallon jugs of piss instead of milk for his cheerios

The OP's question of why this happened hasn't yet been addressed. Is it simply that the reflective heat visor trapped infrared between the glass and the visor and the air in that gap got hot enough to crack the glass? Is this a common problem for folks who use those visors?

The windshield was more than likely already chipped or had an impact whether the OP noticed it or not.

While I still think you need to lighten up...you're right. He probably had a chip somewhere he didn't notice and it cracked.

Happened to me on my 08 R32...flipping one week after buying it! haha!

Thanks for all replies. I will call my agent this week and see how much it will cost. I checked the windshied this afternoon and it began to run downward instead toward the right door pillar <will be come S letter instead of the L now..lol>
