I don’t want a GMC or Hummer EV, but I like the crab steering and 4 wheel steering modes they’ve added. Having operated RT forklifts and cranes that had crab and 4 wheel steering, it can really come in handy. Crab steering would make parallel parking quite a bit easier…especially in a full sized truck/SUV. 4 wheel steering is handy for close quarters turns.

My first car didn't have true crab steering, but it did have a rear steering rack that was coupled to the front and intended to provide improved cornering at higher speeds. In my eyes, adding a rack in the rear just adds another complicated set of components to fail in the future.

Absolutely. Plus, the average person won’t ever use it for what it was designed…they’ll “play with it” when they first get it…then maybe never use it again…OR, ge the two axles out of sync and not figure out how to get it right.

I think it's kind of a neat tech feature but I don't know how often I or most owners would use it but it sure does look cool in the commercials and YT videos I've watched that feature it.

AFAIK, there a few vehicles out now that can parallel park themselves, but that too, is adding another layer of complication and expense to repair in the future, hopefully realizing it failed, before colliding with something while parking.

Even something as basic as electric steering needed for self parking... old SUV w/o self parking, is potentially only a $180 hydraulic steering rack that can be DIY installed. New SUV, $700+ electric rack, sensor calibration, possibly programming needed, next level DIY if possible without a dealer shop intervention.

It would break my heart to pay $2k for an alignment.
A good $150 alignment already includes camber, caster and toe for the front and camber/toe for the rear, making all the wheels point straight ahead. Why would you pay $1850 extra for zero extra work?

I had no idea an alignment was so cheap. It's been at least 20 years since I've had one done. I just assumed it was a stupid expensive process now.

Basic wheel alignment isn't too bad. I think what is more costly in this case is calibrating the rack if needed. I know I got my front rack replaced at dealership on my ford explorer a few years back and it was quite costly.

Wake me up when the wheels in a production vehicle can turn a full 90 degrees for easy parallel parking.

How do the human controls work for that or is it all computer-assisted, push a button stuff? A steering wheel ain't gonna do it.

Ahem, meet the 1988 Honda Prelude 4WS:

There's a Mazda in there too, But afaik nobody remembers it. There were actual 4WS Preludes on the road, I drove one.
The 300ZX and 3000GT both had 4WS in 1991 and on. A 3000GT owner did a detailed track test about 5 years ago to see how it actually handled and ultimately found for track purposes it was too unstable to actually aid.

AFAIK the 4WS was really designed for high speed lane changes more than for high speed cornering.

Self driving and auto driving vehicles eliminate all of these issues. Parking, driving slow in the left lane, cruising through 4 way stops without stopping, parking and taking up two spaces because you're special, etc.

You can pay extra to enable Beemer driver mode.

I used the assisted driving for the first time last Tuesday. It was cool, but I had a hard time taking my hands off the wheel. I took a short video of it, but that was all. I have all of that extra stuff like parking assist etc. but I never use it.

Beemer Driver Mode = honk at everyone, tailgate and take up three parking spots.
