I'm running xppro and am having a slight problem. I can't read any files on my cd-rom drive, a Samsung 48x. Whenever I go to check the files on explorer a box pops up telling me to insert a cd, even if there is already one in there.

It's worked before and I don't recalll changing anything. The drive show up as working in the device manager. I've tried uninstalling the driver, and rebooting, it finds and reinstalls the driver, but still no workie.

What can I try next?

Try it on a different ide cable or try the cdrom in a different computer. If it doesnt' work, it's done for.

If it seems to spin up but you cannot access anything and autorun cd's do not run....and this occurs regularly then it's likely that the lens inside has gone...it's generally the first thing to go.

True, try cleaning the lens first and then get a different ide cable if that doesn't help.
If all else fails, the cdrom just may be dead. If it's still under warranty, get an RMA.

you have a dead cr-rom

of all my computers and there peripherals -

the only components that have every "died" are the cr-roms - i've had two dead ones.
