CPU'S

I'm in the planning stages of building my first computer, are there vast differences between Intel cpu vs AMD cpu?

Try posting this in general hardware you will get a lot more response. There are differnce in architecture and motherboard requirements, upgrade viability, etc. The biggest difference that would concern you is price/performance ratio. I think most people here would say AMD is tops for that. There are technical differences but for the most part they will both get the job done.

I would also do search in the general hardware forum. Thre are tons of discussions on this subject and plenty of people asking advice on building new machines.

Basically what it comes down to in the AMD vs Intel battle is Stability.

If you want strictly stable system, then Intel is the way to go.

If you wish to experiment with overclocking and maxing the system to the piont
of a meltdown, then AMD is the way to go.

Which ever way you go with, be sure to pay special attention to Cooling the Beast.

I wouldn't say that AMD is less stable than Intel. If you go all Intel, CPU, motherboard, etc then yes it would be. The stability of the system mainly comes from the motherboard and chipset. An AMD CPU on an ASUS motherboard with a VIA chipset is just as stable as an Intel CPU on an ASUS motherboard.

The main thing is if you want performance at any price go with Intel. If you want the best price/performance then go with AMD.

For Intel CPU's- for max stablility go with a Intel motherboard. For more features go with another motherboard manufacture like Asus or MSI.

I have a AMD Athlon XP running on an MSI motherboard with no problems, my computer hasn't crashed in over a month.
