CPU-Z reports the proc is not running at the right speed

I believe CPUs underclock to save energy until you run something that requires the cpu to speed up.

it has to do with EIST and/or C1E.

if these are enabled then your clockspeed will drop to 6 x FSB when there is no cpu load on your processor.

when you game it will show the set speed.

Ah ok, thanks for the answers, guys. I don't think my previous proc had that feature (or if did, I wasn't aware of it). So in other words, CoreTemp is lying to me :p (or it's just displaying the advertised speed as opposed to actual).

Yep, core temp always shows the default multi

If you don't want it throttling you can disable C1E and EIST in bios

I looked in the BIOS. The multiplier is set to the default ("Auto"), it's not at 6x as far I can tell. I've been playing BF2 for the past few hours and I didn't notice anything unusual as far as performance.

This is totally normal. There is nothing wrong and you do not need to change or alter any setting in your BIOS or anywhere else.

This is the effect of C1E (Enhanced Halt State) and/or EIST (Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology). Load your system and you will see the frequency increase to its nominal value.

However, this happens only with CPU-Z 1.39 and 1.40. Try CPU-Z 1.38 and you will smile.

BF2!!!! I really want to play.... but :( I dont wanna buy it again.
Don't. There's been a stats server outage for the past month (I kid you not). No points, no unlocks. So, unless you like being stuck with the stock weapons, now is not a great time to be getting into BF2 again. They're very slowly fixing the situation.

I think that the problem was fixed a few days ago. My stats started to update finally after a few weeks of outages.

EIST brings your multiplier down from 9 to 6 when your cpu usage is minimal, but it'll automatically pop back up to 9 when you're under full load

C1E is similar, but it brings down the voltages rather than multiplier

If you have EIST off but C1E on, there may still be some moments where you'll see the lower cpu speed, so disable both of them to ensure you keep the max cpu speed

*wonders how her thread about a wacky multiplier got revived from the dead after a month, and then hijacked into a BF2 discussion* :p

Thanks to the people who answered the original question -- I'll keep things as they are. I don't mind the stepping down of the multiplier if it means using less power :D.

Wait...your reported voltage is at 1.28v stock? That's not right...should be under 1.2v. Also, how are your temps so low with the voltage so high?

I thought stock voltage was 1.35v. Or was that max voltage. Hmm...

I'm not sure why the reported voltage is what it is. Maybe a side effect of the 8-pin CPU power connector? I haven't tried using a 4-pin CPU power connector on this motherboard, so I'm not sure if the voltage would be any different in that case.

I can't believe you went out and bought BF2 in the time between your last post and this one :p. So which one did you get? The compilation DVD with all four games?

I just abought the regular one, I had the expansions before but found out that I just like the regular one :D. A month ago I bought a MS force feedback steering wheel and joystick in excellent condition for $30 so I plan to use those today :D This is going to be SWEET!
