I bought myself a nice little Shuttle SV25 barebone system. It comes integrated with everything but RAM, HD and CPU.

This is basically going to be sitting under a futon as the case is only 16cm high. Im going it use it as a backup file server so speed isnt really an issue. I want to Put Win XP on it but once you see my processor choices I might have to reconsider. I want to be able to config this computer so that all i need when i boot up is the power and the NIC cables plugged in. So i need an OS that you dont have to log in every time but it has to be stable for days on end. win 2k?

CPU Choices:
1.0a Ghz Celeron
Via Cyrix 900 Mhz C3

I really need some feedback on anyone knowing about the C3s or any porblems they have. I know they are very low heat producing and there performance is pretty low, but is it enough for my purpose?

HD: 80 vs 120 GB
maxtor vs WD , 5400rpm vs 7200rpm any opinions would be appreciated. thx

ANYONE who actually has one of these systems , plz tell me whhat u put under the hood.

I don't have the shuttle sv25 but if I had one and was going to use it for your purpose I probably would put the celeron in there. The performance of the Via chip is pretty low but itshould be sufficient for your use.

On a side note, you don't need to log into windows xp or 2000 to access it shares or for any service that it's running to function. If you leave the server on the log on screen you still can access it's shares from your main machine.

How much memory are you planning to put into the machine? Well the only feature that windows xp have over windows 2000 professional is the remote control feature, which might be useful for you since you can remotely log in your server and perform anything on the computer as if you were sitting in front of the server itself.

I personally would get the 7200 drives, but honestly it probably won't make that much of a difference since you are limited by the speed of your lan which is 100mps. So if you want to save yourself a few buck then go with the 5400rpm drives.

DO you care about noise at all? SV25 requires a number of mods to quiet it down to a tolerable level. THe noisiest component is the PSU fan. you have to mod it to 7volt or completely remove it and consider an alternative cooling solution in its place

Additionally, Via C3 is a cooler cpu than the intells cpu. It can be run without a fan(just heatsink) but with the size of shuttles heatsink and limited airflow, i would suggest to use a fan on it and get fanmate rpm controller for it to quiet it down.
C3 is not a fast cpu, mind you. It probably performs as fast as intel cpu with half the mhz of the c3. But for your purposes you dont need a fast cpu.

And definitely go for a 5400rpm drive. It will be quietter and cooler than its 7200 rpm counterpart and quiet and cool is what you need in tiny crammed case like that of sv25.

I have my new sv25 running the celeron 1.0a with just a pep66 heatsink. The temps i get are around 43c and so far no lock-ups at all.
