CPU/Video Card Matching

Hey, everyone.

I was wondering if there is a site, or formula, or something to determine how well a CPU would match with a video card.

For example, how do my 2800+ MPs matchup with my Radeon 9700? Is the card holding the CPUs back, or are they holding the card back?

Would upgrading to an X800 make sense?

I'm not upgrading soon, but even Falcon 4 with everything turned on is a bit slow. I'd say maybe 50fps. There are dips though, and those suck for a game like that.

I'd appreciate if anyone could give me any advice on this.

Well basically, the better Video card you get, The better game performance you will get no matter what processor. X800 would probably last you for a while, but it is overkill unless you are gaming ALL the time. But I would say the CPU is definately a crucial part in gaming, but you also need lots of ram for today's games and the good video card.

Not necessarily. If the CPU can't keep up with the instructions, and thereby slow down the game, the GPU isn't going to take over its workload - it's going to render what's given to it and no more. That's why someone with a slow CPU and high end GPU can enable FSAA/AF and it won't further slow down the game.

Might wanna take a look at tom's VGA charts here. Compares a XP2700+ vs 1000Mhz Athlon with cards up to 9700 Pro

I'd stick with the card for right now and upgrade to the 6800GT when it becomes widely available. It won't give you more frames than your 9700 pro in CPU limited games, but you'll get more constant FPS.

CPU scaling is very important! An athlon xp 2100 will cause a ATI x800xt to perform about the same as the 9800xt! You really need 3000 + on Intel and the Athlon 64 over 2000 on the AMD's to begin to allow the new Video cards to spread their wings.

You're never going to find a site or formula for this. It really all depends on the individual game itself. Some games, like simulators, really need beefy CPUs and you can get by with just a mid-range graphics card. Other games, like Halo, will run fine on a relatively slow processors as long as you have a really powerful graphics card.

I just got a 9800 Pro which i promptly overclocked to 425 core and 400 memory and my XP 2000+ can't keep up for it's life. I think I'm gonna have to get an athlon 64 setup when I get the cash so I don't feel ripped off...
