my cpu utilization is 100% all the time for no reason that i can see i was overclocking then all of a sudden everything was laggin and actin wierd so i switch every thing back to stock thinking it was unstable for some reason eventhough i ran the same settings through 36 hrs of prime 95 well any way after i changed to stock speeds i went into msconfig to turn off programs i know that i dont need and its still 100% ut and kinda laggin i did a virus scan and a spyware scan and even defragged my disks i did the scans before i saw that it was 100% ut do any of you know of a program that scans all running programs and tells the cpu utilization of each program or do you have any suggestions thanks

Where are you seeing that the CPU utilization is at 100%? If you are looking in Task Manager to see the utilization, just look in the same place (on the Processes tab) to see which process is taking up the CPU time.

I recently had the same problem after doing a recovery on a Toshiba notebook. If you look again under task manager/processes, look at the cpu column. For me, winlogon.exe was consuming 100% of the cpu and would never let go. I had to boot into safe mode and disable everything Norton (it was pre-loaded with anti-virus software). That solved my problem completely. Toshiba is the worst for pre-installed softwsre....what crap! At least I managed to rid the machine of all the unwanted spam they gave me......

If the process taking up all your cpu time is a container process such as explorer.exe, winlogon or svchost, then you can download processExplorer from the systernals website and it will let you see all the processes running inside the container processes.

First it was my cpucool program now its my "System Idle Process". is this normal? if it isn't can it be shut down safely just by pressing the end process button in the task manager? I do have norton and i have scaned for viruses, syware, and malware.

Trying to read that post made my eyes water. Try tossing in a period now and then, or just a few commas so I can take a breath.

To answer your question, 95 to 99% on the idle process is normal.
