CPU% usage when the PC is idle 40-50%??

Hi,
I have a question about CPU% usage when the PC is idle "no programs started".

I use win98 "first edition" freshly installed... without any soundcard or network card on my mobo and NO drivers only those that are included with win98.

My CPU usage is 40-50% when I don't touch anything but when I move my mouse (cursor) rapidly back and forth it drops to 0% cpu usage.

The only card on my mobo (Asus A7V 133-c) is Asus V7700 GTS (fastwrite on and off, no sb) I install the latest 4-1 drivers and detonator drivers it still shows 40-50% usage.

Any ideas??

heheh, i had the same problem a while back ago. When idle it was about 21% but when i moved my mouse it jumped down to about 1%.
search the threads and you'll find out that its a problem for win98 users and is not a rare one too.
ps. ive got win98se, and still have found a solution besides moving the mouse constantly 🙂

i read on some forum the other day that there's some hard drive option regarding "read ahead cache" and "write behind cache" or somethin similar to that...but turning those off solves the problem/utilizes less cpu%.

i think it jumps up when youre not doing anything BECAUSE youre not doing anything. if you have several applications in the background, windows starts working on those since it detects youre not using your computer.

some programs realizes that your not using any CPU power and it starts using them itself...

oops.
well there is really no problem, but i have never seen this before and to use a cpu when nothing extra is pulling threads is strange.
and cpu utilization is heating things up a litle for no reason.
and my win98 is realy fresh, there is no application is installed.
i have done trial and error in bios with no luck 🙁
