hello PCers
my athlon 64 3400 processor has for four years run idle(no apps running) at %0 to %4 CPU Usage when I check in task manager. I've got this documented from tests I did at PCpitstop.com plus it's just something I check pretty often out of habit. Today, out of the blue, my CPU Usage is idle at %30 to %60... NO applications running! it irks me greatly. I've erased all temp, recycle bin files and defraged, searched for suspicious processes, and run ad-aware to no avail. I don't run any anti virus or norton or whatever

little tidbit, i just installed and ran Second Life for the first time last night but it seems pretty good about only running when it's running. It doesn't seem like the problem to me but likely could be related.

Don't worry, the cpu usage is due to automatic update (it's patch Tuesday!). Turn off automatic updates, and go to windowsupdate.com and usually you can grab the updates there, then you can turn automatic updates back on.

yeah, I don't run automatic updates since that would use up CPU cycles when i don't want them used, as they are now.

update! in task manager "system idle processes" consistently uses the cpu 97 to 99 percent of the time since last polled.
that don't seem right do it?

Actually, it is.

Dang, I though I had this one. Automatic updates slows down a lot of people every month, causes one of the svchost.exe processes to stay at high cpu usage between the time it knows new updates are up there, and the time the updates have been downloaded.

But system idle processes is just what it says, how idle the cpu is.
