CPU Usage at 95% at idle? XP

Windows XP
Athlon 1700
gigabyte mb
512 ram
radeon 8500

In "Windows Task Manager" my computer shows that the CPU
Usage runs from 60% - 95% at idle. The processes are all
at 0% most of the time "system Idle Process" is 99% (which it should) but
the CPU Usage is high????
I just fdisked c:/ and reinstalled XP due to other
problems I was having and thought it would take care of
this too... it didn't any idea?

So far I have updated XP and installed zonealarm
(firewall) and mcafee virus scanner thats it.

I had a similar problem with Zone Alarm and XP untill I downloaded the newest version. Is yours version 2.6.362 ? If a eariler version you can have problems with XP. My system runs aprox 3 precent at idle.

I just uninstalled zonealarm and rebooted... no change 🙁
my system also use to run at like 3% cpu usage... unfortunatly I didn't notice when it changed


any other ideas?

Is your computer acting slugish or are you going by what the task manager is showing you. 😕

Had the same problem here. Also had constant hard drive activity. Posted a request in the M$ newsgroups, but of course they were of little help. Typical "we got your money for our OS so screw you!" M$ attitude.

I posted my question on the ms newsgroups first..... I should have known better.... got zilch.
