CPU usage at 100% WAY too often...

Ok, so lately a process called iPodService has been sucking up all my CPU power and increasing my pagefile by approx 250Mb. Now today rundll32 has been doing the same thing.

Can someone please explain to me why these processes are acting like this.

Any help would be great...

Bring up your task list and see if anything else is running in the background, such as a defragger, virus scanner, etc.
And look for "startup list", see if anything else is going on that should not be such as adware, malware, etc. Also Adobe is infamous for having startup programs for their software that can take over a CPU if they are updating.

And if a program has a memory leak, it can cause your swapfile to start running constantly. See what your RAM usage is running at while this is going on. With 1 GB RAM, you should have some free RAM available.

End the process. If you need to load something to your Ipod figure out where the executable is and start it back up when you need it. It really doesn't need to be running all the time. Friggin iTunes is crap.

itunes was doing the same on my pc, i set it so that it does not start up when i start my pc. it will cause quicktime to start up too. go to start>run>services.msc then you'll see it in the list, i set it to disabled at startup. to shutdown the helper service and quicktime go to start> run>msconfig then click on the startup tab, uncheck the boxes for qttask etc, ituneshelper etc.

What the last three posters said. I'll often find iPodService.exe and iTunesHelper.exe eating up precious cycles on my computer. Just end their task and stop them from starting at startup. Personally, I think iTunes is a bloated, ugly piece of nonsense and I use a winamp plugin to transfer music to my iPod.

are you sure these are even legit .exe's. I dont recall ever seeing anything but itunes.exe from my itunes while updating. If your ipod isnt plugged in the ipod one should be idle @ 0 or it might just be spyware by the same darned name.

Download process explorer for a better look at what exactly is running in the background:

I find it very useful.

Then use process explorer to google the .exe files that are eating your cpu cycles. Confirm the size of the file in your C:/ partition to make sure it's legit.
