I've got a client with a Dell XPS 410 computer with a Core 2 Duo E6300 1.83GHz processor.

Can I drop in a Core 2 Duo E6600 3.06GHz processor without any issues?

I checked the dell website for bios updates, and the only one they have is for improved NIC compatibility.

Should be no problem. Same socket, E6300 same gen processor as E6600. BTW, stock E6600 speed is 2.8GHz.

It's actually 2.4 GHz, but who's keeping track. It should work and its a worthwhile upgrade.

The Core 2 Duo E6600 at 2.4GHz would be a simple drop-in upgrade. The Pentium E6600 at 3.06GHz might not be as it is from a much later line of CPUs. You'll want to double-check which one you have.

It looks like it only supports up to 65nm CPU's.

Oops, guess I was looking at the Pentium E6600. It's still a dual core though. Is it worth the upgrade?

What's the difference between the pentium dual core at 3GHz and a core 2 duo at 3GHz? Is it just he L2 cache?

Thanks for the spreadsheet DeathReborn. Looks like I'll have to reconsider after all anyway.

Well, I had to go & click the link to find out:

Intel Pentium D 945 Presler 3.4GHz 2 x 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Dual-Core Desktop Processor CPU-PD945-R

Answer is no (for general use & almost all circumstances - no doubt there'll an odd bench somewhere where NetBurst clock speed wins out).
