CPU upgrade: T-Bred @ 1.47 -> Barton @ 2.16

Aside from the cpu, my system specs are as follows:

333fsb gigabyte ga7vax
9800np
1gb DDR333

So i'd be looking at +: 690mhz, 256k L2 cache and clearing the bottleneck between my fsb/ram and the cpu (266->333) for $138.

Sound good?

It's still not a 'high end' processor. But it's certainly a cheap upgrade and will perform well enough for an extra year or two compared to your current setup.

Of course if it's a T-bird B you may get pretty good results OCing it, which is even cheaper than a new Barton.

I never have good luck overclocking...even small amounts end up preventing bootup or causing near immediate reboots once booted.

yeah, I know it isn't high end, but it's near enough the best I can do with the motherboard I have. Close to the best I can do with socket A period.

Besides, I still have a huge upgrade to make in the GPU department when the time comes.

Plus I'll upgrade to Athlon FX/PCIx (or whatever's best then) in a few years 🙂

Yeah I'd do it. I went from a 1.53 1800+ to a 1.83 2500+ barton and OCed to 2.2 and never looked back. Definitely a good improvement which was low cost!

I also have same success in a shuttle SN45G with only a tiny Vcore increase (1.6v -> 1.65v) using a Barton 2500+

Damn, that's crazy. It's not lack of cooling that's stopping me, nor is it the CPU. Could the motherboard be at fault?

Mine wouldn't push 175fsb or so until I upped Vcore to 1.725 which caused too much added heat, so then I ordered a ThermalTake Volcano 12+ and installed it with some AS5. The combo dropped my temps dramatically and I am now able to run 200x11 or 2.2Ghz stable, much past that and the temps start climbing again and prime95 fails. I have heard of people getting 2.3 or so out of them but I think that's gotta be the best of the batch!

Malladine - Is your cpu locked? if so when raising your FSB, your Nbridge may be getting too hot, esp. if you have onboard video. You might try a cooling solution for your Nbridge or if it's unlocked, lower your multiplier until you find your highest stable FSB, then start bringing the multiplier back up until your CPU temps are about where you want them, then test stability. Good luck!

OP for around $200 (with cpu, mb & fans and such) I upgraded my proc/mb from a 1.53ghz amd 1800+ with 133fsb to a 2.2ghz 2500+ with a 200fsb. It's been many months now and beleive me the difference is phenomonal! I would instead of the 2.17 Ghz 2700+ go for the 2600+ mobile from newegg, it's only $95 shipped and runs cooler/OCs better and probably won't be multiplier locked. Your choice though...

It might be the motherboard. That board doesn't offically support 400 FSB, just 333. So as soon as you push your FSB past 166, they aren't garunteeing it will work. Some motherboards are good overclockers, some aren't. You probably just have a bad one.

True, my msi kn72 delta-l is only rated for 333mhz but has settings that go beyond 200. I think it stops at 215. I know it works up to 200 just fine.

Its worth it. The sheer mhz and increased fsb will be noticable driving that 9800pro much better. Let us know how it goes.

Yes but get a mobile barton as they are much better OCers; However they do not come with HSF, so head on over to SVC.com and get a SLK-947U and a panaflo 12L or another fan and youll be set.
