CPU Upgrade (s939) question

Hope I can get a little help here.

I want to upgrade my chip. Currently running a single core AMD 64 3000. Want to go to a dual core chip. But, I can't seem to find the one I want. I'm a Newegg/ZipZoomFly shopper.

My question, what will I lose by getting a chip with an L2 Cache of 2 x 512 instead of one that has a L2 Cache of 2 x 1MB? They seem to be harder to find in stock.

I found a 4800+ online last month. It was from someone who decided to go C2D.
The deal was great, since then the X2s with 2x1MB are getting hard to find, especially at cheaper prices.

Even the dealers' prices have reflected that fact on the 3800+ and 4400+ too.

Check AT's For Sale Forum for those X2s. Good hunting.

There're a bunch of AMD 4400+ selling $200+. Good deals galore.

The extra cache is a marginal improvement. The Athlon64 1MB chips are in short supply. However your mainboard may support Opterons so you can pick up a nice AMD Opteron 170 Denmark 2.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor - Retail for $185 shipped

the opteron 165 is, 1 cheaper, 2 has the 2x1 mb cache, and 3 will overclock very well 4 do they even make the x2 3800 for 939 now

where at? i haven't looked for a while since i got my 3800 for ~$150, but to be honest had the opterons been close in price then i would have bougtht one of them....

Yeah. The newer X2s overclock better than the older ones (which is the exact opposite of single cores). So go out and buy yourself a X2 3800+ and OC it to 2.5GHz+ and be a happy bear, like bob4432 said (minus the happy bear part).

its $155 on newegg, and a lot of people are getting over 2.6ghz with default vcore, some even clamming higher.

im ordering one later today.

I run my 3800 X2 @2.4 all the time at stock voltage. I hit 2.6 at stock and it was stable but I dont need it at 2.6 so I let it be at 2.4, never goes above 50c after heavy gaming. I love my little X2 3800.

Only people who bought X2s and never tried the Opty 165 would recommend that purchase.

Well, at the time the cost dif was huge. Now its not an issue I guess.
