Hello all. I have been out of the upgrade loop for quite a while and I see so many options with the different types of CPUs, I've done some searching but not sure what to get.

I currently have a Athlon64 3700+ in my PC on an A8N SLI board. I was looking for my best cpu upgrade options without changing out the mainboard as well. I am really not sure where to turn, higher clock in the 64? FX? X2? Opteron? Confused! Looking in the less than $400 range. Is that even worth an upgrade?

Any input would be appreciated.

That all depends on what you do with your system. If it's only gaming, crank that 3700 up 400 Mhz more, and put the money into a better video card. If it's for futureproofing, get any dual-core Opteron, and then see how fast it will run.

I have 2 7900GT's, so not looking to upgrade there quite yet. I have 2gb of ram, a 320gb hd. I see the cpu as my weakest point, or am I wrong? I feel like I could be getting a lot more out of this pc with a more powerful cpu, agree or no?

Thank you for the opteron suggestion though, I was not sure what the best option would be. I will look into that.

That A64 3700+ is plenty powerful enough for most apps, & good enough to drive hi-res gaming through your 2x 7900GT in SLi. So in which apps are you looking for a performance increase? If it's video-encoding or heavy multi-tasking, then a dual-core makes sense. Otherwise, why not just OC a little (maybe 11*240 for 2.64GHz) and see if an increase in clock speed is appreciable/measureable to you?
