A buddy of mine has some compaq machine and he wants to upgrade it with a new CPU

The CPU he has in there now is an intel Celeron 500 PPGA, on an Intel i810 chipset board.
Does anyone know how fast of a cpu we can put in that machine...or can it support the Coppermine PIII chips?

thanks

Need more info than that to tell you.

But anyway, why does he want a new CPU? If he has a Compaq w/ 810, does he really need it? What applications, and will a new CPU make that much of a difference for them?

Your friend will practically need to contact Compaq technical support (which sucks btw) and ask if he can upgrade his CPU.

Do you have the motherboard info? That would be most helpful. You can probably get it from Compaq's website if you have the model number. That info. should enable you to find out what the maximum clock settings for that board and thus, how far your friend can upgrade.

Hopefully he isn't looking to play many 3D games, either that or have him grab a PCI V5 as well (though drivers won't be updated...)

Don't know if the i810 Mobo is customized, so do ask Compaq.
