CPU Upgrade Question

Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading the CPU on my PC, the mobo is the GeForce 6 100pm - M2. I've read that it will take the AMD Phenom processor, but as this board has been around for some time, I'm not too sure if it will work with the more modern ones. Any info would be appreciated.

Many thanks
Dave

AM3 cpu's don't seem to work on all AM2+ MB's. could be a MB issues with not being properly designed even though the socket can physically fit it. I would stick with am2+ socket CPU's to reduce headachs.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies (so far). I’ve checked the board and it’s the GeForce 6 100-M2 v3.0, and from what I see at http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Pr...goryID=1&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=20&LanID=0 there is quite a range of CPU’s available to me. Initially I looked at the AMD Phenom II x6 core 1035T, 2800 MHz which is retailing at about £155 at the moment, but then noticed the AM3 Athlon II 640 at x4 core, 3000 MHz, which is selling at about £100. My problem now is deciding if the Phenom is £55 better?

I would really appreciate any advice which would help me out with this, or anybody’s opinions regarding any other CPU in the list that stands out from the crowd. I don’t use the PC for playing games, more Coral Draw, Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

Thanks again
Dave

If you are doing mostly gaming or light video editing then get the X4 core.

If mostly doing video editing then get the X6 core.

I would lean toward the X4 core as some programs have a hard time using 4 cores, let alone 6.

Just update the BIOS before you buy.

I don't like the 6 core Phenom ][ CPU's because they have the exact same amount of L3 Cache as the 4 Core versions.

I would get a fast X4 AM3 processor and that way you could use it on your next motherboard.

Just be sure your board supports the amount of Watts the CPU consumes. A board like that usually peaks at the 95W versions and not the 125+ Watt Black editions.

You could PM tcsenter (who I believe has that same motherboard). He may have some tips or hints on maxing performance

What cpu are you currently using, and where do you plan to purchase your new cpu so that we may compare prices for you?

The L3 cache on the PhII may be beneficial to you in some apps --- I'm not up to speed on the current version of Corel Draw (I've got an old version that I use) to know if additional cores will be of any benefit over a more speedy dual core like the PhII 555BE. Additional RAMs always help.

And the PhII 945 may also be up for consideration.
