CPU Upgrade question

I am very confused on a CPU Upgrade. I use my computer for 50% internet, 50% applications including burning CD's & DVD's. No games--No Overclocking.

I have:

AMD 64 3000+ Winchester
Gigabyte K8NS Ultra-939
2x512 dual channel ram

My budget for a CPU upgrade is $200-250. I plan to keep this system for 1-2 years, then I will upgrade the whole system after Windows Vista is stabilized. For now I am going to keep my current motherboard. I am considering the following:

Athlon 64x2 4200+
4400+
4600+
Opteron x2 175
FX-55

I am looking for the best bang for the money. The 4200 can be bought for $200 which should give me a significant improvement over my 3000+. If I go to a CPU that costs 25% more, I would like to see a 25% improvement without overclocking anything.

Which way should I go?

You should spend $99 on a single-core 3800. You may notice a 600 Mhz increase in clockspeed, but for what you use your processor for, you definitely won't benefit from owning a dual-core processor.
