CPU upgrade problems

I changed my old XP1600 out for an XP2600+ (Barton) and while the computer runs fine for a while it will reboot or (mostly) just hang after a while. The new processor actually uses less power than the old one. I have tried a different power supply. I have unplugged 2 CD/DVD drives and 1 hard drive, so I don't think it's power related. The temps seems to be in the mid to high 40's. I can run 100%CPU for 20-30 min with no problems, but when I try to play MP3's or video or browse the web it usually hangs in a few minutes.

The motherboard is a ECS K7VTA3 (v8). While ECS doesn't say that this exact processor is supported, they do support the XP2600+ Thorton, the XP2500+ Barton, and higher Bartons.
(Actually I just checked this again at the ECS site
and they do list the 13u 2600 but I think there is a typo as it says 256K cache).

The bios is current but doesn't recogize this processor. I'm not sure I believe the hardware readings, but it says it's running the processor at 1.5v. This is a real (non-mobile) XP2600.

I have Crucial PC2700 2.5 memory (512Mb).

I've kinda concluded that this cheap mb won't run this processor, but I'd appreciate other viewpoints.

thanks

It's a Sparkle 250 Watt -- kinda small, but I was running 2X hard drives, 1 CDRW and 1 DVDRom, with all the same cards/memory previously. I also had the XP1600 oc'd at 1.6 Ghz. Power was my first thought, but I still have problems with the optical drives and 1 harddrive unplugged.

Thats way too small. Purchase a quality 350w or larger power supply such as Antec, enermax, etc. If you still have problems after replacing it you can start pointing fingers at other pieces of hardware. Unplugging an optical drive really won't do much for your system as far as saving power is concerned.

So you're saying I've got problems with the 12 or 5 volt rail rather than total power? I hadn't thought of that.

Tiime for a new PS...
