I changed my old XP1600 out for an XP2600+ (Barton) and while the computer runs fine for a while it will reboot or (mostly) just hang after a while. The new processor actually uses less power than the old one. I have tried a different power supply. I have unplugged 2 CD/DVD drives and 1 hard drive, so I don't think it's power related. The temps seems to be in the mid to high 40's. I can run 100%CPU for 20-30 min with no problems, but when I try to play MP3's or video or browse the web it usually hangs in a few minutes.
The motherboard is a ECS K7VTA3 (v8). While ECS doesn't say that this exact processor is supported, they do support the XP2600+ Thorton, the XP2500+ Barton, and higher Bartons.
(Actually I just checked this again at the ECS site
and they do list the 13u 2600 but I think there is a typo as it says 256K cache).
The bios is current but doesn't recogize this processor. I'm not sure I believe the hardware readings, but it says it's running the processor at 1.5v. This is a real (non-mobile) XP2600.
I have Crucial PC2700 2.5 memory (512Mb).
I've kinda concluded that this cheap mb won't run this processor, but I'd appreciate other viewpoints.
thanks
