CPU upgrade issue

Hi all, first time posting here. Hopefully you guys can help.

I just upgraded my processor from an amd athlon 64 x2 to an AMD phenom II x4 965, I did not have to change the board as I had to purchase a new one a few months ago and went with a socket am2+ that supports the Phenom II x4 965

Its a BIOSTAR ta790GXBE

http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/content.php?S_ID=419

I havent made any other changes to my system configuration which is as follows

8 gigs ddr2 800
ATI radeon 5850
3 SATA HDDs (250, 500, 1tb)
1 SATA SDD
Antec NeoPower 650 Power supply

and after putting in the new processor I get an error where my computer freezes completely and static comes out of my speakers. This requires a restart. I have been checking temps religiously and it hasnt passed 34 degrees when this error occurs (I also have a thermaltake cooler master heat sink).

I currently put my old CPU back in and the error hasnt occured yet, and so far it would have considering I cant go 2 hours without it happening on the phenom.

I did not do anything involving drivers or a clean install of my OS thinking that since there were no hardware changes other than the CPU it would not be necessary. I have the latest BIOS version.

I am thinking its a defective unit and I just want some confirmation before I start an RMA process.

Also I cant register the stinker on the AMD site as the OPN isnt listed under phenom II x4 (HDZ965FBGMBOX) so I'm not sure whats going on there either, but im not sure you guys can help with that.

Thanks for any help!

What is the model of the athlon? I'm guessing it has a lower power draw than the phenom unless its pretty old. Most people say that the proc is rarely the problem. Could be that your board can handle the athlons power but not the phenom. Have you checked all your bios settings after changing the proc? Might want to make sure your voltage is where it should be.

Thanks for the suggestion! I agree that the CPU is rarely the problem. Im going to check that out asap.

The mobo did detect it properly but it could very well be that it didn't just the voltages correctly or something along those lines. I'll definitely have to check.

The athlon model is AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz

Now I cant find the voltage on the 965 specifically :|but the voltage for the 955 is 0.875V - 1.5V, Do you think its safe to base the voltage for the phenom off of that?

Oh yeah, both are 125w.

Your BIOS is lastest and greatest? New CPU = new timings, multipliers, blah, blah, blah.

Go back in to BIOS and set either default or optimal settings, save, reboot and see where you are at.

The biostar page you listed shows that your motherboard supports 125W processors. Newegg and Anandtech say that your new processor is 140W. I'm guessing that's your problem right there.

Edit: Waitasec, That stock number does show up on AMD's website as a 125W processor. I dunno then. At least you can check your bios settings against amd's listed specs.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I went in and did a detect optimal settings and saved. booted up with one stick of ram and I just had a system crash. Same deal. Im trying one more time with all 8 gigs of ram now, I doubt its the problem but I felt it safer to have the stuff in my case rather than sitting out in the open (though it was on an anti-static mat)

Also it looks like there are two versions of the 965 a 140w and a 125w I have the 125.

At this point I'm about to send it back to newegg.
