I am upgrading my CPU/Mother board from an Intel P3 to an AMD Athlon XP 1700+. I was running Windows XP pro on the Machine. Will I have problems with Windows XP recognizing the hardware. Will I have to reinstall XP ?? (a complete reinstall??) other software.

This is my wife's work/production machine. If I lose any data or have too much down time she will kill me.

Thanks for any help

Doing a motherboard switch can be quite disconcerting for your PC.....sometimes it works ok, sometimes it doesn't....I did it once but haven't done it since.

There is also the fact that you can never be 100% that it's running as well as it could, generally it's best to do a clean install after changing something as key as the motherboard.....if you are just changing the processor then generally this is not needed (with the exception of going from a spitfire duron to a morgan duron, to enable the SSE).

I have found that the repair option is not a good idea with XP....the 4 machines I have used repair on have all had major problems afterwards, even though the repair seemed to solve!

Hi,

I actually did the same thing to mine. I upgraded my PIII 800 to an xp1700+. After I removed the PIII and put the XP Motherboard and Processor in, it booted up and detected the drivers and everything.
In another instance, I upgraded my old anthlon to a later motherboard an a better processor (both AMD) and it went thru hell.
So I would sugguest that if you have a extra HD handy, I would use that to build your wife new system.

Good Luck.

you really should reinstall windows after changing instruction sets like that. Your machine will act very differently if you do not. Will it work without, of course it should but not like it's supposed to. If you only need to back up data, thats really easy esp. with a cd burner...

Welcome to AT! The best thing to do would be back up all the essential data and re-install the OS. When you are backing up, remember to save website favorites, email settings and address book, and take note of any configuration "tweaks" (such as desktop wallpaper, visual settings etc). It does not have to be a big deal to swap a mobo and CPU, just save what you can't replace. Good luck, and again, WELCOME! :D

Thanks for the info.
Any idea if it will boot, or will I have to boot from a diskette, or CD. Can I boot from the Windows XP CD ?

Yeah you can boot directly from the windows cd....providing you have backed up you can see what happens when it boots with the new board but as I and others have mentioned....it will never be working optimally until you have done a clean install ;)
