Hey folks,

At the moment I am using a Intel Core i5-4460 in combination with a Gigabyte G1.Sniper B5, but I am planning on upgrading the CPU to a Intel Core i5-4690K.

My question: will the combination between the i5-4690K and Gigabyte G1.Sniper B5 provide me with a stable system? I currently have the latest BIOS installed, so the MB does support the new Devil's Canyon CPU.

Yes, but kind of a sidegrade.. for the next 2 days you can upgrade to i7-4790k for $279 with promo code EMCWWPC84.

Is the i7-4970 better? It isn't unlocked, so OC'ing won't be an option.

Let me provide the rest of my system specifications, so you guys have the entire picture:
  • CPU - Intel Core i5-4460 (Haswell);
  • CPU Cooler - Scythe Mugen 4;
  • MB - Gigabyte G1.Sniper B5;
  • RAM - Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB, PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600);
  • GPU - Sapphire Radeon R9 290X TRI-X 4GB DDR5;
  • HDD - Seagate Desktop HDD, 1TB;
  • SSD - Crucial MX100, 128GB;
  • O/D - Samsung SH-224DB, Black;
  • PSU - Seasonic S12II-Bronze 620W;
  • Case - Cooler Master N300 (+ extra case fan).

@OP, it will be an upgrade but the improvement for the money spent will probably be so small as to be unnoticeable outside of benchmarks. Reading your other thread, it looks like you have money burning a hole in your pocket. I'd personally rather spend it on a big SSD, some nice accessories (Logitech Z906? 27" 120hz IPS?) or set it aside for a vacation/trip with family and friends. There aren't really any large gains to be made in the performance of your system (at least for gaming) in that price range.

A review of that board indicates it can overclock. Is that your intention, OP?

If so, once overclocked to 4.4GHz+, a 4690K would represent a fairly significant improvement over a 4460, since the 4460 runs at 3.2GHz with all cores loaded.

If sale of the 4460 is anticipated, this is an upgrade that may be worth making, if it is known that more CPU performance would help a particular situation.

If you are set on upgrading then the only thing I can really see any form of sense for is a 4790k. You'll get the decent clock increase along with HT.
