Hey everyone.

Needed some help in finding the proper CPU to upgrade this Vostro 1500.
I'd like to get the fastest CPU possible for this Lappy. I run Pro Tools and wanted more CPU as 1.4 is the minimum requirement (like to get minimum 2.0 GHz), and also this laptop has the Texas INstruments firewire chip which is needed for latency free and noiseless, M-Audio device recording.

I've googled this a dozen times. I'm sure the 13th time would have yielded less than vague results, but I'd rather ask my fellow knowledgeable members here. Thanks!!

Here are the details:

Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T5270 1.4GHz (CPUID Reports CPU at 1.596.1MHz which would make the CPU a T5470 though) ??
Merom
Socket P (478)
65nm
Core VID 0.850V

Core Speed 1596MHz
Multi 8
Bus Speed 199.5MHz
Rated FSB 798MHz

Cache
L1 Data 2x32 KB
L1 Inst. 2x32 KB
L2 2MB

BIOS ver A06

the following should be an easy swap for you, if accessing the processor is not too difficult

Core 2 Duo T7250 - 2.0 GHz, 2 Mb, 800 MHz, P
Core 2 Duo T7300 - 2.0 GHz, 4 Mb, 800 MHz, P
Core 2 Duo T8100 - 2.1 GHz, 3 Mb, 800 MHz, P
Core 2 Duo T7500 - 2.2 GHz, 4 Mb, 800 MHz, P
Core 2 Duo T7700 - 2.4 GHz, 4 Mb, 800 MHz, P
Core 2 Duo T8300 - 2.4 GHz, 3 Mb, 800 MHz, P
Core 2 Duo T7800 - 2.6 GHz, 4 Mb, 800 MHz, P

then there is also

Core 2 Duo T5850 - 2.17 GHz, 2 Mb, 800MHz, P
Core 2 Duo T5870 - 2.0 GHz, 2 Mb, 800MHz, P
Core 2 Duo T7100 - 1.8 GHz, 2 Mb, 800 MHz, P

all these are sticking the 800mhz fsb of the 5270/5470

Thanks guys. I am a bit leery about purchasing a 45nm CPU when my current one is 65nm (Penryn) like Lanyap suggested. But, if it's been done before as the links show (thanks for those) then I'm all for a cooler running less power sucking CPU. Faster to boot.

I'll search around Ebay for a used one to see what fits best.

I do appreciate the help. ;)

For a laptop thermal and power will still be the biggest issue, just make sure the TDP doesn't differ too greatly from the original i would say no more then 10w over.
But looking at all the ones available for socket P 35w was the norm so all should be fine ;) (except cooling possibly)

I'm going to be upgrading a Vostro 1500 laptop CPU, and it seems like the T9300 is the best bang/buck for around $60 on ebay, and I think the 45 nm will help with heat issues as this laptop was known for problems with heat and failing soldering or something. Anyone go through with a CPU upgrade for the Vostro 1500 or similar laptop?

Edit: OK I just noticed the T8100 is around $10-$12, so I decided to go with the T8100 as it's very similar to the T9300 except runs at a lower clock speed of 2.1 GHz with 3 MB cache instead of 2.5 GHz with 6 MB cache. I think my current slow CPU issue will be resolved with either chip, so I won't tangibly benefit by spending the extra $40 on the T9300.
