CPU Upgrade and WinXP

I am about to upgrade my cpu from an AMD FX 53 to an FX 60. I would prefer not to have to do a clean install of WinXP. Does anyone know if I can get away with this? I am a bit worried since I am going from a single core to a dual core.

I don't think it should be a problem at all. no driver changes and nothing gets modified.

Hi, No problem if you are only changing the PROCESSOR and not the MOTHERBOARD.

A clean install is not required, however you will need to change the ACPI HAL configuration to multi-processor. In Device Manager, under Computer, is the ACPI item. Open that and Update the driver, select the option to install from a specific location, and then Don't Search and choose the driver to install. You should get an option for a multi-processor.

huh?

All i did when going from a A64 3000+ to a x2 3800+ was plug it in and windows recognised new hardware and asked me to restart...it was done.

Maybe it works better these days. Hmmm. I guess Windows actually considers it a standard ACPI PC, since there's only one socket, even though it's two cores visible.

The "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" HAL is meant for multi-processor PCs, but the "ACPI PC" is single processor boards with a single processor ("Uniprocessor PC" is for multi-processor machines with only one CPU).

Thanks for the replies and ACPI PC driver tip! Now I just have to hope that the install of the cpu and the corsair nautilus goes off without any hitches. This is the first time I am trying water cooling.

Dont forget the windows dual core hotfix off the M$ site and the AMD dual core driver off thier own site also
You will need both of these when you go dual core, at least I did.
