CPU upgrade advice needed

I am currently running a FX-6300 @ 4.8ghz. MB is a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 with 8gigs of ram. Additionally I'm running a AMD 7950 and a Samsung 250 gig EVO SSD. A pretty solid setup. However, I have then upgrade bug. My second system is a Phenom x4 945 on a GA-78LMT-S2P which supports the FX-6300 as well. This is my steam box and additionally has a Corsair Force Series 3 SSD and a MSI Geforce 650 TI.

The 99$ G3258 setups have me very tempted to jump the AMD ship to a Z97 board for future upgrades. I'm trying to be cost effective and looking at a G3258 combo on a Z97 board or a FX-8350 and put the 6300 in the steambox. Just would like some advice, I feel a FX upgrade would be a dead end path but, a G3258 to a i5 in the future would be more expensive with a minimal performance increase.

I live near a micro center so I have many options. Thanks for the advice.

The FX system overall is solid no issues. The steam box machine is more of the focus. Low performance on the 650 TI and the phenom x4 945. Not sure which part is the issue. A G3258 with a solid over clock should be a substantial upgrade over the phenom.

Option #1 G3258 for the steam box no upgrade for primary rig $100
Option #2 FX-8350 for primary, 6300 to steam box. Both machine get increase of performance. $150-170.

Option 1 gives me an upgrade path to devils canyon or broadwell with a Z97 board but more cost down the road.
Option 2 more cost effective, but am3+ feels dead in the water. Is it worth investing in a am3 chip or prepare for a intel upgrade down the road?

The first thing to do is to determine whether or not the CPU or the GPU is the problem. No sense trying to solve a problem that doesn't actually exist.

Go into one of the games that is giving you an issue and note the framerate (hopefully the game has framerate counter since FRAPS doesn't work on SteamOS). Then reduce all graphics settings (including resolution) and note the framerate again. If the framerate improves, then you're GPU-limited. If it remains about the same, then you're CPU-limited.
