Hi,

I have a HP a6040n box that I am upgrading; new PS (Antec Trio 430w), new Video Card (EVGA 9600GSO).

The box shipped w/ an e6320. (1.86Ghz 7*266)

Does anybody know what the fastest CPU I can throw in is?

Thanks for any help!

Stating what motherboard your pc is using would be useful. You can use cpu z to find out the name of the motherboard.

You're most likely going to be limited to Conroe processors with a 266 Mhz FSB/1066 quad pumped FSB, like the E6400, E6420, E6600, E6700, and X6800. That means you'll want to buy a used E6700 from fleabay, craigslist, or maybe here, although newegg is still selling the E6600 for $230. You should be able to buy an E6700 used for considerably less, though.

edit: I didn't your your link. It says you can use any of the processors I mentioned, plus any of the E4x00 series. So, you could grab an E4600 for $120, or an E4700 for $140, and get a fairly significant increase in speed.

Thanks for the comments!

With respect to the BSEL mod, the mb doesn't support 333.

What is a good price to pay for a used e6700?

I have mounted an asrock g43 full hd in my compaq presario, and all the compaq connectors will work in this asrock. It's 1333 with overclock jumpers and onboard video with hdmi support. With this newer chipset, you should be able to run almost any core2 duo without a bios flash. It has 2 ddr2 slots and 2 ddr3 slots.

That was going to be my next recommendation as well, instead of dishing out bucks for an e6700 just replace the motherboard and overclock your e6320.
