I currently have a p4 2.4 cpu. I have 768mb pc 2700 ram and a ATI x800 pro gcard. I was looking to u/g my cpu. Is it worth upgrading to a amd 64 3200 at all because although its a good CPU i would rather get something like a 3500 but not willing to pay that much for a CPU at this moment of time . My mobo is a Gigabyte 8sq800 with max fsb is 533 so i was looking at a p4 3.06. Will it make that much of a difference to the overall performace or what other cpu would u rec me getting ?

Many Thanks.

well i also have a p4 2.4 prescott, and mine is OCed to around 2.8-3.0, and thats with only changing the frequency in the BIOS.

it really also depends on which type of processor it is. mine is a pentium 2.4a, and that will also make a difference whe ntrying to oc it. i would really reccomend you just oc what you got now, and save yourself a lot of $$$ and its not even too complicated.

dont pay over $300 for a processor when u could easily get yours up there.

The 3.06ghz northwood is a good chip, and has hyperthreading, but will be hard to find. Unless you can get it for a reasonable price, you may be better off upgrading your mobo, cpu, and ram together.

Yeah inoticed that aswell. Hard to cum by. only seen it on ebay but was going for roughly £110 (roughly $200). might aswell add a few more pounds on and get a 3400 64 amd n a decent mobo. But even then my urrent setup does seem to do fine , half life 2 seems to run fine on a decent res without jeryness so might just wait a few more months and give it a complete makeover.

How easy is it to oc ? i read articles about voltage settings and decent cooling etc. Is it jus about increasing the multiply rating in the bios ? and also because of the mobo ppl have itmightlimit the overlockability.

well its pretty simple to to a small overclock, you dont need to go out and buy a new hs fna or anything, and you shouldnt mess around with Vcore settings. actually on alot of mobos the vcore settings are locked, and you cant change them anyways. at least mine is.

(i have an ASrock board, with BIOS V. 1.50, idk if yours will be different) just go into the bios and set the CPU frequency to manual and SLOWLY increase the frequency, FREQUENTLY rebooting and making sure it will infact boot up.

i got my 2.4 up to a little over 2.8 on stock cooling before it wouldnt boot up.

i dont really consider that an awesome OC, but on stock cooling i didnt have to spend a dime.

its all about what you want to accomplish though
