CPU Tempurature

Hi I just built a P4 2.8E machine. I'm not even overclocking and it is running at 47-51C right now. Ran Prime95 to stress it a little and it went up to nearly 60C. This isn't normal is it? I'm using stock heatsink/fan and 1 side fan. Would adding a couple intake fans in the front help? Thanks for any suggestions.

hey Denny,
Do you have exhaust fans in the back? If so, how many, and do they push alot of air out? I like two intake fans and two exhaust and one side blowing in. Also, are you using the stock hsf that comes with it? If not, make sure that you used the right amount of thermal paste, too much or too little can hurt. Also make sure that the program you are using to monitor the temps is dependable.

A couple intake fans may lower the temp a few degrees, but your results are pretty normal. Especially with the stock HSF. If prime95 runs stable for a long period of time I wouldn't worry about it. Else you could buy an aftermarket HSF to drop the temps considerably (up to 10-20 degrees C)

So those results are normal at idle? I dont know alot about Pent 4's but I do know that Northwoods run cooler than Prescotts. Which one do you have? I didnt think anything above 43 idle would be considered normal. Just my thoughts though. Im not familiar with these CPUS.

I agree usually that would be hot, but given his current setup with only 1 side intake and no front/rear cooling (which is rather standard nowadays) plus if the room is hot ~50C during idle is very normal. My dads P4 2.4 runs around 45 or so with side and rear fans with the stock HSF and not overclocked. Just seems fairly average to me.

If you want to be sure, always remove dust from your case/fans. Also, check your thermal paste/tape's contact with the die (remember not too much or too little) and the seating of the HSF to ensure proper heat conductivity. If these seem fine then investing in more fans or a better case would definitely help things. Also if you are only checking temps with your motherboard, try using Motherboard Monitor 5 as this can give more accurate results. My cpu/case run a lot cooler according to MBM5 instead of the BIOS readout and the MSI program.

Those temperatures look normal for a Prescott.
