I have just finished building a new system and plan to do some overclocking. I downloaded MBM5 and CPUZ to check setting/temps etc as I OC.

After setting up MBM5, I thought I had made a mistake because the CPU core temp shows 35-36 degrees in an idle state. To verify, I checked my CPU core temp in BIOS and it actually is 35-36 degrees idle. This seems unusually high to me.

I removed the heatsink and checked the paste job and it appears to be done correctly.
Can anyone verify if this temp is uncommon when you started? I feel that it should at least be 30 degrees in idle. ( the room was around 70 degrees also )

Setup:
Case: Tsunami Dream
Mobo: DFI lanparty UT nf4-Ultra D
CPU: Opteron 165
Heatsink: Zalman CNPS9500
Paste: Arctic silver 5
Memory: 2GB OCZ PC4000 Gold
Video: ATI 1800XT

There are 4 fans in the system. Front case, rear case, side case and heatsink. Heatsink fan was on max RPM

Thanks in advance,

I might add for the fans...
Front (bottom) case: blows in to case
Side case: blows in to case over heatsink
CPU HS: Blows front to rear
Rear (center) case: Blows out of case
power supply also blows out of case (rear top)

When you removed the hsf to check the paste job, did you redo the paste job. If not, hten you should. Once you remove the hsf you always need do clean off and reapply the paste. What are your ambient temps room/case. 36 does sound a little high for that moster zalman. Also make sure you follow the arctic silver instructions, only need a smaller than a grain of rice sized blob in the middle of the processor's heat spreader. If you put too much it will give you higher temps.

my opty idles at 36 ish with a ninja and a 120 mm fan. as long as your load temps stay under 55 i wouldnt worry a whole lot.

An opteron 165 is going to run a little hotter than an opteron 144.

Thanks for all of the replies. I started thinking that maybe one of the parts got contaminated with oil or dirt.
I am going to remove the heatsink later this week and clean the CPU and heatsink bases with high end alcohol, incase they are/were contaminated. I tried not to touch them, but you just never know. They also could have been contaminated before ship.

If the temps stay the same after cleaning and new paste is applied, then I will work with what I have.

well, my amd 4000+ runs 36c idle. BUT I have a Scythe Ninja passive (no fan at all) heatsink on it. One tri cool fan in the back on LOW, and one 80mm psu fan running very slowly.

Can only hear it from about 1ft away (whole system).

Update.....

Picked up some 99.8% isopropyl alcohol wipes from work last night to clean the CPU and heatsink. replaced AS5 and reattached. I also played with raising my FSB, but for the life of me can't figure out how to change my Core voltage.

200 FSB (standard) idle 33C (1.27v)
275 FSB (+75 FSB) idle 34C (1.27v)

I'd go higher and run under load once I figure out how to modify the voltages and understand a little more about the settings.
I haven't OC'd in a while, so I am starting fresh again.

Any advice for DFI lanparty UT nF4 ultra-D????
How to change setting...
desired settings....

to change the cpu volatge, i change the cpu vid to whatever you want. then you can also change the cpu vi % to whatever you want. for instance set to 1.35 + 104% You need to read the overclocking guide http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=28&threadid=1497607&enterthread=y before you just haphazardly go around changeing voltage. You dont need to change voltage unless the cpu is not stable at a certain overclock. Run 2 instances of prime with affinity set to each core. if it fails, then either up the voltage or lower the htt.

also why are you using mbm5, smart guardian is included with the dfi boards and is a great temp/voltage monitoring tool
