CPU Temps

I just got a new X-Connect 500W PSU, but I had to remove the heatsink to get the thing installed. This had me a little worried because I had to repaste the CPU and this is something I've never done before.

When I put the thermal paste on I used only a drop, about the size of a grain of rice, and then I spread that over the CPU with the card that cmae with the paste. I was very careful to get a consistent coverage, very thin. I made sure both the heatsink and the top surface of the CPU was clean before I did this. I'm pretty sure it can't be the thermal paste, but I'm not so sure now.

Anyway, my main question is about CPU temperature. I have a ASUS P4P800 MB with a Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz with Hyper-Threading. I installed the Asus Probe utility to monitor core temps. I also downloaded the latest BIOS version (1019) and flashed my BIOS with it, following the instructions on the ASUS site. After rebooting I got a "CMOS Checksum Bad" on the post screen, but I rebooted again and it has not returned.

The temps were showing 27C/80F for the CPU, and 28C/82F for the MB just with a browser open and windows explorer. After the update my CPU temps have changed very little. Now they are 28C/82F for the CPU, and 29C/84F for the MB. These are temps with just a browser window open and the Asus Probe utility.

Twice tonight an alarm has went off on the Asus Probe utility. It says my MB temp has went up to 125C and the CPU fan has went up to 23360rpms. I shut down the computer both times and opened the case, but nothing was hot or even warm. Could this be a flaw of the utility? Or could this have something to do with new PSU or perhaps the BIOS update I did?

Just a moment ago the Asus Probe was telling me that the +5V had spiked on my PSU. I believe you may be right, and I think this utility might have to go, especially if its going to annoy me with every little hiccup it has.

Thanks.

You have probe correct? Just go dnld a different version of it. Different versions of Probe are buggy on some systems and not on others.

The version I had was 2.23.06. I just uninstalled it. I found another version 2.24.10 and intalled that. It doesn't look any different.

They all look the same (if the interface is what you are reffering to). Some are just less buggy with different systems. Give it a go for a while and see if you get the same issues you were having with the previous version.

It may seem irrelevant, but let me ask a question.

Does your new PSU have a fan-control rheostat on it? Do you fiddle with the fan-speed in the PSU? and is it sensored off the mobo?

I had similar symptoms in Probe, but they would occur when I adjusted the rheostat knob on the PSU fan.

Your 2.4C Northwood is remarkably consistent with many other reports about that particular processor and speed. Mine also was reporting temperatures below the motherboard "ambient." It's an extremely cool processor, and over-clocks very well.

In fact, I think you can take it to 3.0 Ghz if you're using something like OCZ EL Gold DDR500 modules. I know I did -- after I got the "heads-up" to the combination in a Tom's Hardware article.

And they were also using the P4P800 mobo, also -- like me -- like you . . .

I have never had problems with ASUS probe and I have had mybo c/d`s all the way up to 3.8 at one time....

But I have been very fortunate with this build....
No major compatabnility issues at all!!

Bonzai, thanks for the info. I just ordered 1Gig more Kingston PC3200 dual channel RAM (should be here tomorrow). I already have 512MB on the PC. The PSU does not have a control for the fan. I have been considering overclocking, but since I'm so green to all of this I'm a little leary of doing it. Would you have a link to that Tom's Hardware article?

I uninstalled Asus Probe. It was giving me too many false alarms. I have been using MM5 and it seems to be fine. It has given me no such false alarms (or any at all, for that matter). I also installed the Speedfan utility. I like it so far, but most of this stuff is totally Greek to me. Is there a setting somewhere so Speedfan will start when Windows starts? I didn't see one anywhere. Also I had a runtime error after right clicking the icon down by the clock and the pop up menu just stayed there. I had to reboot to get rid of it.
