CPU temps

So When people talk about cpu temps are they talking about the actual cpu reading or the core readings, because I know on speed fan it lists temps for both and the core temps are generally about 10C higher than the actual cpu listed temperature.

My cpu temp is listed at 22C idle and 26-30C under load.
My core0 and core1 temperatures are 29-32 idle and 36-40 under 55% load.

Anyone care to list their temperatures along with their cpu type and level of strain being put on it so I can find out which temps are safe for certain cpu's. I'm using a zerotherm copper/aluminum HS with a coolermaster fan, please list if your using a water cooling unit.

Thanks

not using speedfan, but using coretemp, i have an e6600 (stock: 9x266mhz) oc'ed to 3.4ghz (9x378mhz), idles @ 32c for both cores, and loads @ 57c (prime95 dual small fft's) for both cores. I think i applied a tad too much thermal paste though, my load temps i think should be a couple degrees lower, but its fine anyways. im using a thermaltake big typhoon air cooler with a s-flex fan. for most amd k8 cpu's, 60c should be the absolute maximum temp imo, for the older core 2's, 60c should be the max limit, but for the newer g0/m0 steppings, the tjunction is higher @ 100c, and its max temp i would say should be 70c at the very most.

Generally, either measure is going to be sufficient. Most anything recent (or even not-so-recent) from AMD or Intel is going to have a temp probe located close enough to the working silicon that a reading from it will be accurate enough for you to determine whether or not your hardware is in any danger.

As for safe operating temperatures, that info can usually be gotten from the manufacturer.

AMD is available here:
http://amdcompare.com/

And Intel here:
http://processorfinder.intel.com/

Just follow the provided menus to your CPU for specs.

Any CPU temp reading below 35C should be reexamined. Anything below 25C should be immediately discarded as inaccurate. These temps are very very low for a modern high-powered CPU.

Your temps (OP) are 15C higher than you are seeing through speedfan or coretemp.

I'm a silent freak, so most of my systems idle near 45C and peak near 60C in normal (gaming) use.

that is highly incorrect

its not hard to have a modern CPU idle at lower than 35c at all

i've even seen my idle temps lower than 25C when i left my window open when i was out.

when people refer to their CPU temps it can be EITHER the Core temps or the temperature at the heatspreader (i think its there) so if you really wanted to know what they're talking about u should verify which they'r talking about

currently my core temps are:
61C,61C,61C,61C (Q6600 + Prime 95 for few hours)
my CPU (at heatspreader) temp is 59C

depending on my room temp (68-72F)
my core temps will idle around: 31C-35C
and CPU (at heatspreader) will idle around 28C-31C

On my Q6600 (B3 stepping) overclocked to 2.7GHz (300 x 9 @ 1.25) I get 37, 33, 34, 34. I'm using a Zalman CNPS 9700 NT (the silver one). I'm starting to think that I haven't done a good job applying my Arctic Silver 5, though. Running Prime95 for about an hour puts me at 60, 58, 57, 57.

Thoughts on that? Should I reapply my thermal paste?

mikecron --

If you switch from silver-based TIM to diamond-based TIM, you can reduce temperatures another 2 to 3C.

The entire profile, though, for CPU cooling, involves several things:

Whether VGA exhaust air goes into the case to mix with cooler air, or gets flushed out directly and quickly.

Whether the computer-case has enough intake air.

Whether enough CFMs are flowing through the cooler fins.

Whether CPU exhaust-air is flushed out directly and quickly, or allowed to mix with cooler case interior air.

The size of the case.

The number of intake fans. Already mentioned per "enough intake air."

A sufficiency of exhaust fans -- if all case interior air can be directed and literally forced through them without causing the case interior air to warm up.

An efficient power supply with reliable cooling.

Everything is directly -- linearly -- adjustable according to the room-ambient. An increase in room-ambient by 1C degree will cause idle temperatures and load temperatures to increase by 1C degree.

Right...because most of us measure "normal" temps when we leave the window open and the temp in the room is 50F/10C. Most human beings live in rooms that are between 70F/21C and 80F/27C. This would make a 25C idle temp pretty rare without very good cooling AND a cold room. A 35C idle temp, while very possible, is probably on the low side if you are reading the temps accurately.

Read what people wrote before you say it's innacurate.

My E4500 idles at 22C and 2.93GHz, stock voltage and 8 hours Orthos stable... But the fan is on at full and there is a 120mm exhaust fan behind it. My ambient temps are around ~20C maybe? Goes up to 50C at load, maybe the idle is wrong.

hmm its 72F in my room now and my Q6600 is at 28C @ 3.57ghz.

readings from coretemp& speedfan with +15 offset

I just installed a C2D 6550 and both CoreTemp and SpeedFan show 34°c @ idle. That's with the stock cooler.

reboot straight to bios to normalize and bios said 31C

all temps readings were right after 3dmark finished.

so I really have no idea

btw enzotech ultra cpu cooler with artic silver 5 mix

and 7 80 mm case fans with side

case was thermaltake lazer 3

any feedback to this would be nice as well as my feedback to above

sig system has yet to be overclocked yet waiting for ultra extreme cooler before attempting. this is my spare rig behind my main system. :)

also same version speed fan on this setup and it matches ntune control center exactly so seems to me 3 out of 4 tell me something then there prob right?

after about 30 minutes from running prime 95 im idling at 36C according to coretemp while running it average 49-51c hit 55 couple times on core 0

still at 3.780 ghz played COD 4 for about 30 minutes got to 48c play Guild Wars for about hour stayed the same.

ran prime again had 3 cpu programs going and running two serious of test on prime then got bsod

but booted right back into oc'd

other programs show 21c like I said in previous post speed fan matched ntune reading on my other system
so kinda hard to know actual temp only thing is can say is that bios temp also is in between the two readings. when I boot to get to it

so I hope that helps you know what your temps should be based on your cpu, fans, case ect...

I completely forgot about this thread...thanks for all the replies. After christmas I installed a new fan on my zerotherm cooler and had a little trouble with my computer turning on. (I had to re seat the HS because the backplate fell of when replacing the fan..i was forced to take the mobo out : /) Needless to say that made me quite nervous, everything was sorted out with a cmos reset and the operation was a success.

My room ambient is around 68F or 20C give or take 1C but my cpu now idles at 18C and the cores at 26-28C (both of them off a degree from eachother).

under 76% load the cpu gets to 28C and the cores get between 33 and 38C.

This is with an e6750 overclocked to 3.2ghz (400fsb x 8) with a 1:1 ratio

PS: any of you thinking about purchasing a zerotherm cpu cooler i'd suggest getting a different fan for it, my fan wouldn't go above 900rpm and was preventing the HS from properly cooling my cpu. (I tried most everything to increase the rpm)

And one more thing, I already had added 15C onto my speedfan reading, before i did that i was at 3C idle :p

Do a google search for "Core 2 Quad and Duo Temperature Guide". There's a thread in another forum which provides some very good information on the subject. (I've just checked it and it's being revised!)

BTW, SpeedFan version 4.34 beta 37 reports the corect temps now, so there is no longer any need for the "add 15C to your temps" business...

sfbeta 4.34 doesn't install for me on Xp 32...
