CPU temps went all funky

recently updated the BIOS on my k8nsnxp-939. the temps went from 20 C to 37 C load, which didn't surprise me. however, after installing a new hard drive, the cpu temp went up to 50 C load. the airflow in the case is still basically the same, however, i look in nvidia's system utility about 30 min. into a windows session and i see my fan is running at 1500 rpms... this could be bad? i thought it was cool and quiet, but i couldn't find that option in the BIOS, only the Smart fan control, which i disabled, and that didn't help. any ideas on this?

The fan has some problems. It should be running at at least 2700RPM, that's what happens with bushed fans. I think it's time to 1. clean out the dust off the heatsink and 2. buy a new after-market fan (ball-bearing).

ok. so that's it, there's no other explanation? i've had the fan for only 6 months... it would seem that it wouldn't go bad that quickly.

and the fan speed is fine when i first boot. i check it, and it's running at a good 3100 rpms. as time goes on it turns down to ~1500. i'm going to check the bios again for cool and quiet.

could you have knocked the heatsink a bit when you installed the hard drive? If so, take the HSF off, remove the TIM, and reinstall it with a new one.
