CPU Temps -- is my Asus P3V4X to Blame?

If anyone has any opinions on this please share.

Ok, here's my story. Last March I bought a Celeron II 533@800 from Compuwiz. I paired it with an Asus P3V4X, GlobalWin fan and Abit Slotket. Everything worked smoothly until I upgraded my setup and gave the old one to my sister. Since then (about 4 months ago) the temperature of the Celeron II has gone skyward -- it usually hits about 90-95 Celcius. Obviosly something is wrong. I figured it was the chip. This morning I picked up a brand new Celeron II 800. I installed it and before I could boot into windows the machine reset and the motherboard gave a warning sound. I went into the bios and the cpu temp was 97 celcius. It seems clear to me this is not a cpu problem.

Do you think this is a motherboard issue, a slotket issue, or something else? I have checked and the cpu fan is working, as is the case's power supply. The bios states the cpu fan is spinning at about 3700 rpms, so that seems ok.... Oh BTW, my sister is using an In-Win A500 case -- not the best in terms of airflow, but this was the same model case that I used originally...

Again, any insights are greatly appreciated. ;)

Hi,
Don't jump to conclusions yet. I have an Asus P3V4X with a p3 700 fcgpa => slot 1 @ 933. The system is quite stable. Are you over clocking? If not the Celeron may incompatible with the board or you set the settings incorect? Is the mobo set on auto or manual for jumpers? You haveto make sure you were precise on how you set the mobo up. :) I won't lie. It was trial and error for. Good Luck....or just get a FCPA => slot and boom...maybe easier to setup for ya.

MiamiJones, the system has been very stable, it's just that the temperature readings have been out of control. I disabled the temp. monitoring in the bios and the system is running fine. I decided to try this after I would run windows until the temps got into the mid 90's (celcius), then I would shut down and would touch the heatsink and the slotket -- they were completly cool to the touch. I flashed the motherboard bios to 2 different versions in hope of fixing the temp. glitch reading but it didn't do anything... So I decided disabling the reading was the best option ;)

if i am not mistaking, the P3V4X mobo has been known to give inaccurate, out-of-whack temperature readings. I had a p3-700@1045 on it, and it would always tell me that my cpu temperature is 35°C. With the heatsink that is on there, there is no way the temp could be that low. You disabling the temp reading is probably the best thing to do.
