cpu temps down almost to mobo temp

Posted in technical advice but no takers, maybe since the processor is the most telling - someone here might have an idea about the problem.

CPU temps have dropped to temp of mobo. CPU mips down to a 1/3 of normal as is the ram. Which is the more likely....cpu bad, ram bad, or motherboard bad?

I'm guessing the cpu due to the temps?

Any insight appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
KY DAN

Well, the only thing you've described that suggests some sort of problem is lower performance.

Are you using an AMD or Intel processor? Which model then?

I can only say what I know about certain Intel models. They either have a loose-jointed CPU multiplier for throttling down to a lower speed for thermal reasons, or they are designed to throttle down that way even without the lower multiplier.

What processor? What motherboard? What memory? And especially, what BIOS settings?

Somebody should have an answer for you if there is more information on your hardware.

Sorry about that. Forgot to plug in the details. I built the computer for my wife and it did not have to be much, but it has the P4 2.6 800 FSB w/ HT on the ASUS P4P800E. Antec 480 power supply. I'm using a 100 gig hdd, win2K, etc.

Which bios settings?

The problem occurred suddenly. I came home and the Asus probe showed that the temp dropped down to the temp of the mobo almost instantly sometime during the day.

Everything else has been the same for months. Ran a scan at pcpitstop and the readings showed down to 1/3 the normal for both the mobo & ram. MIPS was in the 3000 range, and the score was at 35% of what 15000 others scored.

Wasn't sure if the processor almost died dropping its cycles to 1/3 reduced the temp and affected the ram, or the mobo is interferring with the interaction of the cpu & ram, etc.

Thanks for the response.

Run CPU-Z to check your speeds and download throttlewatch to see if you computer is throttling itself. Check your bios settings and see if they are ok. Someone in your family may have messed around with it one day.

There is no problem that teh cpu temp is lower than mainboard.
The mainboard has a chipset, and on the p4p800E, i think its the 865pe, anyways the chipset does run hot, and it was not unusual for the cpu to idle lower than the chipset temp. (My cpu runs at LOAD cooler than my chipset does when idling)

Now since it performing worse it could be that the chip is running below stock frequency, maybe someone set the fsb speed to 100 that would make ur cpu run at only 1.3ghz, which would explain the performance drop.

The cpu will either work or it wont, or it will continuosly crash, so if the cpu works its not dead :p

Thanks for the suggestions. I've contacted the online store, and even though it only had a 3 month oem warranty, they seem willing to work with me on this. I'm going to try and switch out the cpu before I send it back just to find out the answer.

The temps were sudden as was the under processing (after 2 months). I am the only one that has used it for the last month or so. I was kind of breaking it in for the wife and checking its parameters.

The coolness of the chip was a plus but not at the expense of the processing. I had already checked cpu-z as well as the pcpitstop system checks and the chip or mobo definitely feels like it is dying. The cpu-z specs were correct with the bus, the clocks were 3-3-3-8 or something close to that (old age you know), etc.

Looking forward to finding out the answer myself. I'm betting cpu.
