ok, when i upgraded my computer in december, i bought a shuttle ak31a mobo, athlon 1.4ghz cpu, and a really cheesy cool master hsf($6 from newegg.com). well with that hsf, my cpu idle temp was around 45C and under some load it was upto 54C. well today a friend of mine gave me a better hsf(he ordered one from newegg.com, and they gave him two!). well i installed this new hsf and my idle temps are higher! 50C+, WTF!! i know i did it right, and i used arctic silver thermal compound, any advice as to what is wrong? here are the links for the two hsf's:

both hsf's are cool master brand : http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=62&manufactory=1333&DEPA=1
old hsf : cool master 6I11A $5.00
new hsf : cool master HHC-001 Pure Copper

Well there's a few things worth checking, as stupid as they are. First make sure that your hs fan is actually running, and in the proper direction(check documentation). Also could you have put on too much thermal grease? This can definately make a big difference...

i know that the fan is running, but not sure about the direction (everything came attached, no assembly required, so i assumed it was ready to go as is).
there is no thermal pad on the bottom of the heatsink, but i did clean the bottom with some alcohol and a cotton, lint free cloth.
as for the thermal paste, i did everything that they said on there website, all 15 steps or so, i made sure that there was a good contact by placing the heatsink in place, and then removing it to make sure that there was some paste on the bottom of the heatsink, and there was, so i put it back on, kept the case open, turn the puter on, and made sure that the case fans and cpu fan were working, and they were, so i closed the case, and let the computer idle for an hour, came back, and the temps were 50C, still there, dont know, anything else?
i'm going to try it again, clean off the paste, reapply, i'll see if that helps(and yes, i put a small layer of it, i cover the entire core, and when the heatsink sits on the core, it barely displaces the paste, but it does make contact)

Hi!

Be sure you didn't put the HSF backwards. Also compare the clips, maybe the new one is a little loose.
Also look at the contact zone to see if you have some pattern in the silicon paste, maybe it isn't making proper contact on all the
surface.

Cheers,

I would try to reseat the hs/f. Pull it off. When reinstalling it make sure you have the edged thats milled a little towared the top of the socket where it reads socket a. Ive made this mistake a time or 2 long ago. If its not you probably would have burnt your cpu up by now though.
Basically take it off and try again. If its still high put the other one back on there its obviously better :)

BTW. Whats your friend running and is his temps high?
