:confused:Please see first post from today 1/2 for updated questions! (7th post down) Thank you!

On this system, CoreCenter (and the BIOS) say the CPU temperature idles around 40-42 C and CoreCenter says that under a light load it gets up to 53 C. When I felt the air coming out of the HSF, it feels cool to the touch no matter what the CPU temp is. What gives? I heard these mobos had CPU temp problems with earlier BIOS versions, but I'm using 1.3, which I thought had that all cleared-up. Any ideas?

Sandra2005 says my Vcore is set above the rated maximum, and shows it to be around 2.63V (I think?). (I didn't set it, the BIOS is on auto and chose it, and I'm not overclocking.) Could that have anything to do with it?

This is my first time building a computer, so any feedback for my ignorant self is greatly appreciated.

AMD 3200+ 64 CPU (socket 939)
MSI Neo2 Platinum 939 motherboard
Antec 380 Truepower (came with Sonata case)
1 gig Corsair Value Select PC3200
BFG 6800 OC
120 gig Seagate HD
NEC 3500 DVD writer
running Windows XP MCE 2005

Do you know if your processor is the Winchester core or not? What voltage are you running at?

My CPU temp says like 42C idle and around as high as 61C under maximum load. The figures are bogus to some extent. I would only believe a reading from a quality aftermarket probe or an IR temp sensor. Vcore is 1.52 and moves between that and 1.53 and occasionally 1.55, very stable, FX-55. This is with retail cooler

No probs on Prime95 or any other test, no problems in any games or anything either.

Thanks guys. ohnnyj, It is a Winchester (90 nm) core. The voltage I'm running at...I'm not really sure. Is that the same thing as Vcore? The BIOS is set to AUTO for the CPU voltage, and Sandra 2005 reports the CPU voltage as being 2.22 volts right now. Is that high?

I guess I should try something like Prime95 to see where it gets at a higher load? I didn't have any problems that I know of with 3DMark05 or Sandra's benchmarks. All this is with retail HSF also. Rhin0, how do you know the figures are bogus to some extent? Is that just kind of standard with these mobos, or mobos in general?

Thanks guys.

That's way too high... you should be feeding it only 1.5V. Memory should be getting 2.6 or 2.7 though.

I've had the same problems with my machine. I've got a 3500+ w/ a Neo Plat 2 as well. CoreCenter reports pretty high temps on average. I tried using MBM5 and initially its numbers were 10 degrees cooler than CoreCenter's; now they are both pretty much the same. Idling around 40-45, 55+ under load. I'm not so sure how accurate core center is, my system temp is only 13 degrees, and maybe 16 under load, thats fairly cool in my estimation, so i'm wondering if its bios versions(i forget which version i'm running, its not the latest I dont' think)

ts3433, I guess I'll go into the BIOS and manually set it to 1.5V then? Why would the AUTO function set it so high? Will the temp likely drop if I do that? Anyway, I did set my memory voltage to 2.7, and left all the timings on auto, except for setting it to 1T.

diablo900T, it seems like MBM didn't support the MSI Neo2 Plat, did you rig it to do that somehow or find a version that did support it?

Thanks guys. Happy New Year everyone, btw.

So this morning I went into the BIOS and saw two options that seemed to apply: CPU voltage (which was some kind of percentage multiplier?) and CPU VID. CPU VID looked like what I was looking for--it was on [Start up], so I set it to [1.500 V].

My CPU temp did drop--to idling around 34 C--but then Sandra 2005 showed the speed of the processor as 1.01 GHz instead of 2.01 GHz. Accordingly, performance dropped about half on CPU benchmarks in Sandra 2005. 3DMark05 dropped very little overall, but the CPU part of 3DMark05 dropped by about half also. Sandra 2005 listed my core voltage min/max as 1.100V/1.400V and my CPU voltage as 1.01 volts.

That didn't seem good, so I went into the BIOS, and set CPU VID back to [Start up]. I left CPU voltage as [as CPU VID]--I'm not sure what that means.

Result: Sandra 2005 recognizes my processor as 2.01 GHz again, and all benchmarks went back up. The Core voltage min/max went to 1.400V/1.450V and the core voltage rating went to 1.400V. The temp went back up to 42C idling, but the CPU voltage was listed as 1.34 V, unlike te 2.2 when I had these previous settings (see original post in this thread).

But Sandra 2005 was also saying my CPU fan was failing, because it was around 1500 RPM.

So I left the computer for a bit, came back, and now my idling temperature is 31C, my CPU fan speed is ~2900 RPM again, my CPU voltage is 2.24V, and my core voltage rating is still 1.400V.

This happened before, and when I restarted the computer, the temperature went back up to like 42C. What's going on?

In short, I'm not sure what the deal is. I'd like to keep the performance where it's at, with this lowered CPU temp, and at a healthy voltage. Can anyone help clarify what's going on, and what I need to regulate, if anything? How do these numbers look? I'm not familiar enough with their significance to understand them yet.

Thanks krissssi, I wanted to make sure a BIOS update might improve the situation before I did. I'd heard of temp issues with earlier BIOS versions, but I thought they'd been resolved by 1.3, which is what I have. Have you heard of things like this that are fixed in version 1.4?
