I am thinking about giving my old PC a CPU upgrade but I am not sure whether the old motherboard supports the new CPU.

The board is EVGA nForce 680i SLI/680i LT SLI
It currently has a pentium d940 and I am thinking about dropping in an e6500 but I looked on EVGA's site and they have no mention of the e6500 support.

Can someone help me out here? Thanks

Yorkfield Core 2 Quad processors are not supported on the 6 series motherboards.

** The latest BIOS update is necessary to run Wolfdale Core 2 processors

While they specifically don't list the E6500, it might work. If you want to be certain though, pick one from their "tested" list.

thanks for the quick reply Gillbot, I guess I'll have to give it a try since the e6500 is $50 at frys today. I figured that it's a cheap enough upgrade to be worth a try but I think I might have to update the bios.

normally, if the board supports the same series processor and the FSB you need it will work, though may post as "unknown CPU".

I know i've used many unsupported cpu's in the past. Sometimes they are fine, other times they simply don't post.

do you think that the upgrade from a pentium d940 to the e6500 is worth it in terms of price/performance?

it's hard to say really. It all depends on if you would utilize the extra core, but overall I say sure. Though i'm not sure why you'd opt for a dual as opposed to a quadcore.

I just wanted cheapest upgrade possible (< $50). This PC was mainly used to run WoW and now SC2. Recently though, it's been showing its age when running those games. I am just hoping that this upgrade can give me a few more fps without breaking my budget.
