CPU support for Motherboard

I am going to buy the maximus formula motherboard and the Core 2 extreme qx9650.
QX9650 has support since BIOS 0602 (as given in the asus website)
The board comes with bios 0401 (asus website)

1. Do i have to update my bios before my CPU can even be installed?

2. If i put the QX9650 into the MOBO without updating the BIOS will the CPU be detected?

3. If i have to update the bios first, how can i do it without even installing the CPU? is it possible?

4. What would happen if i put the qx9650 on this mobo before updating the BIOS?

Please help me...

Yes it will work, but you will need to update the bios.

You get an error to the tune of "YOU NEED TO UPDATE TO BIOS TO RELEASE THE FULL POWER OF THIS CPU"

My position is i am in India... spending 3K on a PC is overkill... so i dont want things to get screwed up and forget abt warranty replacements... will take a lifetime here... please help ppl....

I have done it on Maximus Formula and Extreme.

Also with Bios 0103 on Maximus Formula

My MB doesn't support my Processor with the default BIOS, but when I reset it to default settings after an issue came up, it still worked, it just read it as an "unknown hammer processor", and only saw one core. I updated the BIOS, and it worked normally. I would assume that you MB would do the same, but I am not positive about that.

Thank you ppl... one more doubt...
the cooler master extreme power 600W has a CPU 4 pin connector... but the board specs list a 8pin Atx connector.... Should i buy a PSU with that specific connector or can the extreme power 600W manage? I dont know what to do.

On Maximus boards I would use an 8 power connector, as the other ASUS boards have a plastic pulloff to use the 4 pin. The Maximus does not.

This is pretty simply logic, but I think it holds true...

You could probably get away with the 4 pin connector, but it may impair your overclock.

I wont do any over clock.... this is the first time i am assembling my own PC.. i jus used to buy pre-built ones till now... so how can i get away with a 4 pin? can u explain?

yeah if you are not overclocking. 4 pin should be fine.

ok, but how to actually insert a 4 pin into a 8 pin?? some kinda adaptor plug or how?

4 pin goes into 1/2 of the 8 pin. It will only fit into one position of the 8 pin adapter.

If you look in the top right near the IO Panel you will see the place for the 8 pin.

As you can see only the 4 receptors on the rightside of the 8 pin plug are able to accept a cable as the others are covered in a plastic cover.

this is the way the cable should be plugged into the Maximus.
