hi to all on the anandtech forums

i am in the process of buying a new cpu, but was puzzled about the o/cability of various cpus...

i had my eyes on a fcpga p3 700 for $400 (in aus, that's mighty cheap) with a golden orb. my motherboard is an asus p3v4x, but i wont be able to overclock very much until i can afford the pc-133 ram :(

thankyou for your time

get that 700. if you look around these forums many peple are hitting 1Ghz on default voltage. the 700's are highly over clockable. I would recomend at least pc133, preferably pc150, if you get a decent heatsink (alpha pal) and a high out put fan you have really good chance of hitting 1Ghz. well I hope this helps. Good luck

P3 700e all the way 95% at least hit 933. go with the alpha pal for your heat sink, get some artic silver thermal grease and you'll be ok.
If you are a big shot, go for the mushkin pc150 that cost the same as a mushkin 128 pc133, if not cricial tech makes good stuff for about 144 for 128.

Good Luck

Go for the 700E.

Don't buy Mushkin's PC150. It doesn't do 2-2-2.

Go for the Mosel High Perf Rev2 2-2-2 PC133 from Mushkin.

Go for 933MHz with an Alpha heatsink and Sunon 60mm fan(s) from 2Cooltek.

Once you're all set up, crack RC5 for Team Anandtech.

I just turned my 700E up to 933 last night with a Gorb and some Corsair PC100 set at CAS3. It has been cranking SETI for over15 hours now with no problem but I want to get me some PC133 real soon.

I have a BX board..Abit BE6.

look guys, thanks a whole lot for your advice :) yeah ive been trawlin the forums a bit more today and found a whole lot of people with a p3-700

in response to paldo, i dont know about being able to run the memory at 100 while fsb at 133, but i know i can set the mem to 100 on my 66fsb celeron, maybe this is a good indicator :)

yeah, i was thinking about mushkin ram, although i probably wont be able to afford it for a while.... damn i need a job :p

and geekish thoughts, i might just take you up on rc5 :)

thanx a whole ton people :)

Just to give you an idea of what to expect from a 700e mine will do 966mhz at 1.7 volts on a cuv4x. It can do 994 at 1.85 but I don't care to run the voltage that high. Mine is a week 29 mayla.

sorry to bother u cool gentlemen again, but i was wondering if there was any real difference between the slot-1 and fc-pga variants that would warrant me to either get one or the other

thanx again :)

the flip chips are cheaper, and in my experience easier to cool down, but on the flip side, some people seem to think you get better performnce with the slot versions. I guess they might be right but i dunno, intel has been making slot longer and have more experience with them, but it's your call, personally i would go with the flip chip.

yeah, thanx fingers :)

there's also a good $70 between the two, the stock for the fc-pga is lower too, probably a good sign :)

and btw, how do i tell teh core stepping on a cpu?

most places that tell, charge more for the fact that you are garunteed a Cb0 stepping, but by now, just buy through a major reseller and you should be gaurunteed a good chip.

thanx again to all of you, i love you all :p

i was also wondering how to read the cpu codes on the die itself. mine is BX80526F700256E, and if someone could shed some light on that, it would be greatly appreciated :)

i'm not sure, but i think that means is it was made in week 25 because of the 25 next to the 00 that stands for the year, i'm not too sure about htis but maybe somebody else who knows a little more can shed some more light on the subject

the way i figure, ive been able to compare the #'s of several p3's and here's what ive come up with:

BX ?
805 ?
26 ?
F Form factor? fc-pga, secc2, etc....
700 core frequency in mhz
256 cache size in KB
E FSB frequency?

that 26 could be the week, i dunno really.....
