Just to help out, you can try a CPU monitoring program like CPUidle 5.7, Its not freeware but it will lower your CPU temps about 5* or maybe more. It works by putting your CPU in Idle mode. This will tide you over till you get your cooling under control.
list of CPU Software coolers

CpuIdle lowers the CPU temperature by disabling it when not needed. This prolongs the CPU life (a decrease by 10°C doubles the life span) and cuts power consumption. Unlike normal power management CpuIdle is active all the time and works even when you're actively using your computer! RawPower is a CPU optimization program for Win95/98. Most modern microprocessors contain features that can increase the system performance, sometimes dramatically. Most of the features are especially interesting when memory-intensive applications are being run like in 3D gaming. CpuIdle uses all the advanced mechanisms to keep your CPU cool!

Works for me till i get my 1700XP temps regulated.

And for those of us folding, running SETI, or any similar distributed computing program, these programs don't help. I run 100% all the time, as any cycles I don't use are put to use for other projects. Besides, if you cool your system with a software cooler because it runs too hot, as soon as you start gaming, your system will heat up again, and if you were having crashes before, you'll still have them.

Right on Budman. I don't know if it was due to the Athlon or Winbloze 98, but when this proggie kicked in, it would always crash my sys. Maybe I just had something set wrong but...
