CPU Spikes with Nforce2 2500+ barton

I've been getting these cpu spikes out of no where. It's most noticable when I'm listening to music with the soundstorm and suddenly the music starts to skip, pop, hiss, distort. This also happens while I'm playing a video game (the sound distorts but the game runs fine). I kept the task manager open to see where the spike was coming from but it doesn't show me any process that utilized 100% cpu at that point. It would stay constant at 4% or so and spike to 100% for 3-5 seconds and go back to 4%. This happened before I overclocked or changed any voltage settings. I can't find anyone else with the same problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Specs:
gigabyte 7N400 Pro

corsair 4x256 XMS PC3200
2x120GB WD 8MB cache
1x160 Maxtor 8MB cache
Pioneer A06 DVD-/+R
Liteon 16x 166D DVD-Rom
Enermax Whisper 431Watt PSU

Hrmm...did you install windows on "stock" hardware or did you do it on an overclock? You should never install windows on an overclock. Also have you run memtest86?

Spyware checking @ all?

All in the end perhaps a reinstall of windows will fix it.

I'll run a memtest tonight and see what happens. Is there a specific test # i should start at? I didn't install windows while it was overclocked and i haven't reinstalled windows. I'll let you know the results of the test.

Good call. I'd definitely run a spyware check. Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Mine was gettting %100 CPU spikes and slowing my games to a crawl when it happened. Ran a spyware check and problem solved!

Why do you have so much HD space it seems a waste, how do you fill that much up?

Just because YOU don't have a need for it, doesn't mean he doesn't =) My cousin has a 120 GB WD, and 3 250 GB Maxtors... he archived his entire CD collection of just over 1,000 CD's... he converted his home movies to AVI's... and he bought a digital camcorder... the 120 GB is for his programs and downloads... the 3 Maxtors are for his music and home movie collection. Two of his Maxtors are full, the the 3rd is about 30% full. By next summer he'll probably be buying another one =) And he's getting a DVD burner for himself for Christmas so he can have backup copies of all that stuff in case a drive fails.
