CPU-speed incorrectly reported. Bios upgrade needed?

I had an old motherboard with an old Athlon cpu. Everything ran fine and the cpu speed was correctly reported (when I checked the general tab under the properties for the my computer icon).

I then bought a used Athlon XP 1800+ cpu and connected it to the motherboard. When checking the speed of the processor it is identified as an XP 1200+ cpu even though it is an 1800+.

What is wrong here?

Is a bios upgrade likely to fix this issue?
