I recently picked up a Northwood P4 2.8GHz CPU (upgraded from a P4 2.0GHz), and installed the new chip, but my system only reports a speed of 2.10/2.11GHz. Here are some screenshots, hopefully someone can assist because I have not come across this before.

Here's my BIOS reporting 2.80:

Does every stick of your ram have the same default clock?

Welcome to the AT forums!

Whoa! 21x multiplier!

I think you should use CPU-Z *just* to make sure.

Thanks for the welcome! :)

I'm not sure what "default clock" means, but here is my RAM info... I have 1 stick of 1GB and another of 512MB:

Memory Module 1
Model : OCZ4001024V3
Type : 1GB DDR-SDRAM
Technology : 16x(64Mx8)
Speed : PC3200U
Standard Timings : 3.0-4-4-8 (tCL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS)
Version : 0.1
Date of Manufacture : Saturday, December 25, 1999
Set Timing @ 200MHz : 3.0-4-4-8 (tCL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS)
Set Timing @ 167MHz : 2.5-3-3-7 (tCL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS)

Memory Module 2
Type : 512MB DDR-SDRAM
Technology : 16x(32Mx8)
Speed : PC3200U
Standard Timings : 2.5-3-3-8 (tCL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS)
Date of Manufacture : Saturday, December 25, 1999
Set Timing @ 200MHz : 2.5-3-3-8 (tCL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS)

Ok I ran CPU-Z and I do indeed have a 21x multiplier... is that bad?
Here's a screenshot of CPU-Z

One more thing, not sure if this is relevant, but here is the chip that I bought from New Egg: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819116215

I recently bought a 3.0GHz P4 for my main PC and it works great, now I'm just starting to wonder if the fault is with my mobo, it is a discontinued model and is my oldest at the moment.

Right now you're running at 400(100mhz) fsb, giving you 100mhz*21=2100mhz. You need to find an option in the bios to change the FSB clock to 533(133mhz) to give you 133mhz*21=2800mhz.

I guess my motherboard just won't support this particular CPU at 2.8 then?
You are telling me to change the FSB clock to 533(133mhz) so that I can get 2.8GHz, but if you look at my BIOS snapshot, it is already at 133mhz (even though my system doesn't recognize that setting for some reason)...

I also found this information regarding my P4 Northwood at the Abit VI7 site:
The VI7 follows Intel?s recommendation to use new power design VRD10 for VIA PT800 boards. According to the design guidelines, the CPU core voltage from 0.8375 to 1.6000 V. If an old 400 FSB P4 or Celeron processor with CPU core voltage 1.75V installed to VI7 board, the board could not provide such high core voltage and the CPU will malfunction. That's why Willamette and old Celeron processors are incompatible with VIA PT800 boards. The 400 FSB processors which could work on VI7 board are Northwood P4 (512K L2) and Celeron 2G (128K L2, 1.525/1.530 V) and faster CPUs.

Does this mean there isn't a way for me to get the 2.8GHz speed out of my new CPU?

You have a northwood, so that reccomendation dosent apply to you. Check your bios settings once more. Somehow, the FSB is running at 100mhz(400) instead of 133(533), so just double check it, and it should be fine.
