CPU software overclocking? Locked BIOS. Locked multipliers.

Hello, all,

I have already read considerable amount of threads and post to inform myself about the craft in general and my specific situation, despite being new to the overclocking universe. Nevertheless I still have a lot of questions. I don’t sit on a set that any clocker would choose:

• Fujitsu CELSIUS R570 Workstation
• one Intel® Xeon® Processor X5650 (12M Cache, 2.66 GHz, 6.40 GT/s Intel® QPI)
• 12 GB RAM ECC buffered…
• Vapor-X HD 7950 3G D5
• Some old 1TB @7200rpm Seagate barracuda HDD that I need to upgrade.

I see people easily getting 4 GHz with air out of this processor…

Anyway, this BIOS has no option of changing FSB so I think my only option to clock the CPU is software. Thus my first question: what are the up to date options of clocking software for my situation?

I plan to add an SSD for operating system drive and to do a RAID 0 with another barracuda (I have a second disk which is almost the same as the first on another machine) for storage. Also I plan to crossfire with another Sapphire as I have an option of buying it at a very good price. Also I am trying to find a custom BIOS for this workstation, which is kind of unrealistic, I guess. Maybe it is not the right forum but any help on those topics will be welcomed too in order not to create a lot of treads that are generally the same.

There is no up to date software overclocking options that I'm aware of. Back in the day there used to be SoftFSB and SetFSB but I'm fairly certain neither of those have been in production for quite a while.

Actually, looks like SetFSB supports chipsets as new as the x58

It'll cost you about $7 if my conversion was accurate. The free version won't work at all with that chipset

Keep in mind this doesn't have the ability to alter the voltages, so your overclocking, if it even manages to work, will be pretty limited.

What are you using this for? If overclocking is really needed, you can always change the board. A Dell or Alienware board that can take your X5650 to 4+Ghz can be had for under $100.. Would make a decent gamer.
