CPU situation after July 22nd?

Okay, I know everyone is waiting until after July 22nd to buy a CPU, because of the crazy Intel price cuts. I'm in that category too... but I'm slightly concerned.

Even though a lot of people are going to be jumping on the Q6600 for $266, I'm sure there are a good number of people (like me) eyeing the new FSB dual cores, like the E6750... but how are the new products going to cope with the market?

Remember the Conroe launch? E6600s were supposed to sell for around $300, but retailers were setting the price at $450 and still selling out very quickly. I wonder if this is going to be true with this new price cut/CPU release, especially with all the hullabaloo about the G0 stepping.

Cliffs: will CPU prices after July 22 really be as low as the price cut chart says they are?

I honestly think they will be.

In fact, for the April 22 price cuts, we started seeing the prices fall even before the appointed date. Evidence of this is being shown now too...

The Q6600, which was selling for ~$530, can now be had on Newegg for $480 (at the time of this post).

I think that this is different than the conroe release. This is the latest in a long line of price cuts for intel AND amd. In fact, I just read about amd's new price cuts; 169 for an x2 6000 starting tomorrow. Intel is going to hammer their advantage against amd, and they have to make room for the flood of penryns that are already being built. The online retailers are not at all limited in their supply of the G0 steppings, so the prices should be close to the tray price for 1000 unit batches (266 for a Q6600 and e6850 for example). The only one that I could see having problems getting for a while is the Q6600 since it is such a huge price drop and a lot of people have been salivating over it for months. For example, I have patiently waited over a month to save $266 for the same chip, but would I wait this long to get an e6750 instead of an e6600? An e6600 with a p35 mobo and 9x multi might not oc quite as high as an e6750/p35 with and 8x multi, but I'll bet that it's close. A couple of months is a long time to wait these days for something like that.

Are the x2 939's going to be getting a price cut.
( I know it's 100% unlikely, but I wanted to ask anyway =( )

I agree that the only one to be worried about is the Q6600. The dual-core parts....well not only have they been produced in higher quantities, but there have been affordable and overclockable dual-core parts for a year now. Only the quad-core part brings something truly new to sub $300 price point where the sane people live.

I doubt it. The X2 939 price cuts a few months back is probably going to be it, although the Opteron prices are falling.

The Q6600 has already been on the market for a good 6 months so I don't forsee any real shortages. The 1333FSB C2Ds, being new releases, may be a bit hard to find at first, but things should steady out within a week or two I'd say.

you are at 3.8 on your e6600 right now. how much higher do you expect to get on an e6750? 10% over that would be 4.18, can you get that? There are going to be a ton of people out there who don't even reach 3.8 on an e6750.

I'm waiting for these myself - probably going to go with the e6750. I'm concerned about availability and price as well.

A quick call to ZZF about it and they told me that they'll probably have them soon after the announcement on July 22. They did say that prices "might fluctuate" during the first couple of weeks due to demand. NewEgg told me that it usually takes them 6-8 weeks to get product after it's release to general public. I find that hard to believe in this case. I just can't see them taking that long to get a hot product to their customers.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

I've seen only one person so far with a retail e6850, and got it to 4ghz w/1.48v orthos.

You might be right, but I'm going to wait until a ton of people actually have a G0 before declaring a ton of people won't reach 3.8ghz.

we're talking about an e6750, not e 6850. it's reasonable to assume that the e6850's will get a little higher on their oc than an e6750 will, so figure that a comparable e6750 would get 3.8-3.85, which is what poopy has on his e6600 at 1.38 v.

what he's saying is that, even if the e6750 oc's like 10% higher, that it won't bring anything really new to the table; honestly most people would be hard pressed to notice the difference between a 3.8ghz c2d and a 4ghz c2d. however, a cheap quad core brings something completely new to this price level: 2 more cores, from which some people will benefit A LOT more than most people would by the difference between an e6600 and an e6750. so like, the performance you could get from an oc-ed e6750 has been around and available for a pretty affordable price for about a year now, whereas you used to have to pay top dollar for any kind of quad core.

I pre-ordered an E6850 for $338Cdn and one the same Website the E6700 right now is $364 so you figure it out. I just checked and they have 328 back ordered and 140 coming in - not good.
