Time for a new CPU. My original idea was just to get the fastest Barton available @ 333mhz fsb (in this case, the 3000+ model) and sit on it till i was ready to upgrade to the Athlon64 (most probably a couple years from now, i as dont like spending exorborant amounts of money on cpu parts).

This is what i have to work with in terms of price (note: i threw in the 2500+ just for comparison reasons)

$137 AMD® Athlon?XP Barton 2500+(1.83GHz) w/333Mhz FSB 512K Box
$272 AMD® Athlon?XP Barton 2800+(2.08GHz) w/333Mhz FSB 512K Box
$389 AMD® Athlon?XP Barton 3000+(2.25GHz) w/333Mhz FSB 512K Box

If i bought the 2800+ , i would save $117 over the 3000+. That's a nice chunk of cash. My question here is: Is $117 worth 170mhz? Between the 2 (and heck, maybe 3) which of them hits the price/performance sweet spot harder? I don't plan on OC'ing guys, so please refrain from mentioning it :)

I need this cpu to last a long time (my current chip is a Duron 700mhz. To give you an idea of how i like to space out upgrades ;)).

why not buy OEM? I bought my 2800+ for over $100 less than the price you found it for.

I second (or fourth?) the 2500+, I have a 3000+ in my machine and I'm happy with it, but I've seen pics of a 2500+ at something like 2.2-2.4Ghz on air. Highest clock so far is in the region of 2.7-2.8Ghz; if you get RAM that'll run silly FSB speeds (or even a board that unlocks Athlons, heh) and clock the hell out of it, It'll decimate all the standard Athlon CPUs at stock speeds.

Let us know how it goes :)

its bang per buck, and thenhow full your wallet is :)

the 2500+ with a little cooling can oc quite well.

if stability is required, buy what you can then.
